Sorry for asking about what I think is a simple problem, but every time I make a door frame (56X112) and an inner part (48X108) and I assign it a texture it never fits properly. when I test it I use the dev orange texture and it always fits in a strange off center manner. ive tried hitting "fit" and "center" to no avail. I manually change the x and y dimensions with poor results. Any advice would be appreciated.

Many of the door textures (and I think the dev ones are no exception) have a black border around them, maybe to prevent extraneous brush cuts? I'm not sure how you'd go about aligning one properly. The only method that comes to mind is long, tedious labor, messing with the scales and offsets.

yeah, sometimes you just have to eye it out,,

the only reason I could think they'd do that is to avoid subdividing (old HL1 240 subdivide thing....)

but then again, I heard the texture repeat subdivision thing no longer occurs in HL2,,, so I dunno,, need to play with the engine some more (just started yesterday, now that I finally have internet :D:D:D)

As far as I've noticed (as a fairly newb mapper) the door textures are pretty much all the same. If you know what settings to put in, they pretty much fit -- assuming you are actually using brushes this size.

Texture scale, as always, is 0.25; texture offset x: 208 or -48; texture offset y: 0

Make sure 'treat as one' is checked.

I tried a half-dozen of the standard size door materials, works fine.

thanks for the help. so would "treat as one" apply to the door jam as well? i know that its included in most of the door textures.

If there is lots of parts your going to texture then threat as one whould be really good to use :)

the only parts i want to texture are the 56X112 door and frame and the 48X108 door.

i was finally able to get a brush to fit the texture, but i ran into problems when i had to carve out the 48X108 door piece. I would have to retexture it and the texture didnt fit and would obviously still have the door frame parts on it. if anyone knows an easier way to texture a door let me know.

I'm not sure what the difficulty is. you are making the door & frame the same thickness, right? It looks odd if you don't.

step by step, what worked for me:

Reduce grid to 2 units
Make a brush, 56 wide, 112 tall, and 2 thick (this one could be changed to suit, I'm sure)
Select brush
Make a cut 4 units from the left. save both pieces (both sides white).
(With all pieces still selected) Make a cut 4 units from the right. save all pieces.
(With all pieces still selected) Make a cut 4 units from the top. save all pieces.
Select the 5 pieces used for the door frame, and group them.
(With the frame still selected) Add the door brush to selection.
Click the texture tool to bring up the texturing dialog.
Browse to a standard door texture, doubleclick.
Check the box marked treat as one
(All faces should still be highlighted as selected) Click apply
In the X-direction Scale field, enter 0.25, press return
In the Y-direction Scale field, enter 0.25, press return
In the X-offset field (whatever it's called, I forget), enter -48, press return
In the Y-offset field, enter 0, press return

If that doesn't work, I'm a monkey's uncle.

you may have to manually retexture the edge faces of the door, and inside the frame, with something dark. I'm not sure what's intended to cover those faces...

and... obviously there are some non-standard doors, that just need to be tinkered around with.

Phisionary, thank you for the detailed help. Im not too sure what I was doing wrong, but your guide seems like it will be easy and work. im off to go try it now. Thanks to everyone who provided some help!
