Seems moms across the Internet got all whipped up about a new tween Dora the Explorer doll, mostly based on a "teaser silhouette" that Nickelodeon and Mattel released early to generate excitement about the new product. Oops: While there was plenty of excitement, it was more of the "How dare they turn our beloved-if-squeaky heroine into a little hussy?"

You don't understand. It isn't that she looks too sexy. It's the fact that she has become a commercial whore.

Dora the Explorer was a show about a little girl who went on adventures. She had a pet monkey, and trekked through the rainforest, and taught young children observational skills in a fun and engaging way. New Dora goes to the mall. I'm not shitting you, that's what she does--SHE GOES TO THE MALL AND SOLVES MYSTERIES. Also she's computer savvy now apparently and you can plug the dolls into your computer through USB, or something.

Where's Boots? Where's Swiper? She's basically just your average 'tween' girl now with no values outside of "HEY GIRLS, LET'S SHOP!" What was once a cute little girl who was an explorer, teaching preschool children, is now more interested in pretty dresses and lipstick, becoming just another character whose main concern is what dress to wear with what shoes. This is what little girls will be watching and looking up to from now on.

She was already being shoehorned into roles and toys she didn't fit before, like being a princess and so forth, when Diego came along, but now...man, mothers shouldn't be outraged about how she's dressed. They should be outraged about the message she's now sending. A message which is: consume.

Also where the hell are Boots and Swiper? Shit sucks. I've been raging about this all week.
 
I do not necessarily care about Boots. I do care about the whereabouts of Swiper, because Swiper was awesome and could steal anything. He was Carmen Sandiego in fox form, and could only be thwarted by a little Mexican girl's magical ability to reject someone's actions by commanding them three times to do/not do something.

A couple times he even succeeded in stealing what he set out to steal, until he eventually got bored of it or Dora told him the significance of it, and he decided to give it back on principle.

Swiper was awesome.

I agree with pretty much everything Darkseid said. If I ever have kids it's gonna be along ass time into their life before I start letting them watch TV for any significant amount of time.
