That said, how are they getting around the heroes' likenesses being based on WC3 units? I'm not familiar enough with DOTA to be able to identify any of the characters announced so far, but I thought I heard it would have a similar/identical roster.

Basically they've changed their plans from having a prolonged beta and getting all the characters in, to having a brief invite-only period and releasing it soon, then adding the rest in afterwards.
