I was just wondering, what speed connection do you people have, and how do you make use of it? i mean do you download lots on your 600k cable modem, or do you struggle to load up HL2 on 56k?

i currently have 600k ntl, and i must say i download quite a lot. I regularly visit www.fileshack.com to see if there are any new demos/ files, and i am constantly downloading (or should i say legally file sharing) music from WinMX. And just last night i left my PC on to download 700 mb terminator 3 (although i am NOT steling their money as i AM going to buy it on DvD too , if just for the extras ). I also regularly play internet games such as CS, COD, C+C gens, UT2k4 among others.

I also do a lot of shopping on the internet, most the games i buy are from www.amazon.co.uk or www.gameplay.co.uk . Plus i occasionally order cinema tickets (just hours before) and check up on trailers at http://www.virtuetv.com/film/trailers/index.asp .

I'm on 2560/384 cable, I don't download that much though. Occasionally a movie, and some Southpark and Simpsons episodes and ofcourse lots of demo's and trailers. And obviously lots and lots of gaming

I have 512Kbit and I am getting 1mbit soon. Every two days I download 2-3 Gbyte of movies, Tv Shows...etc

2-3 hours online gameing (Q3, UT04)

I have my uber fast 56k modem for which I go onto to this site and a couple others and thats it at the moment. I used to play diablo 2 on the internet but my computer went a bit "funny" so I cant do that anymore, I also used to download some music using kazaa but i usually either had no sources or i downloaded 0.4kb/s.
Hopefully ill be getting bb soon

I know it's a weird poll but because there's such a variety of connection speeds now (for example NTL in the UK offering 150 instead of 128 etc.) I've arranged it like that.

I run a anime server now though... sharing instead of leeching.. because i cant leech anymore

At least NTL make it easy for you. Pay an installation fee (usually they have special offers on where there's no installation fee), they install it all then their rates are quite competitive too.

I'm on a 3mbit/280kbit cable connection.. I don't download alot these days, usually just demos. Only game I really play is CS, and lately, I've hardly been doing that.
Mostly, I just get online to talk to people I know, and post here of course

It's a 2mbit/384 ADSL line here. Started out as a 512/128 line too Got upgraded twice for free. I don't download as much as some do though, only about 3-6 gigs a month (more often 3 than 6). Usually demos and trailers etc, but after HL2's release I expect my usage to increase with all the multiplayer and mods to download.

Ugh, kbps... why is kbps such a popular way to measure speed? Barely anyone has 14.4 kbps modems these days... why not just rate everything in KB/sec that way it's much easier? Anyway I download at 350 KB/sec and upload at 45.

Yeah same here Shuzer. I rarely download things except demos and sometimes music, but ever since my video card died I havn't played anything/downloaded anything. Just VB, AIM, and HL2.net forums :dork:

By how much, my 128kb(might be 150 now) goes at an alright speed but it's no good for files over 500mb, especially if I'm downloading off a P2P network.

Most i ever get on downloads is about 400kilobytes.

I have what is supposed to be 1.5MB down and 256 up, but I have tested my speed and it has peeked over 1.6MB

I don't really understand DSL and connection speeds and all that. Mine is pretty damn slow when it comes to actually downloading stuff. Its best is usually 180kbps....and my connection speed on the dsl Status thing says the speed is 10.0Mbps. It having the big M...makes me think its megabites per second. And if I can convert things right, I thought that would make it like 1000kbps. But it sure as hell dosn't go that fast.

I've tryed all the optomizing and stuff...that didn't do anything.

http://www.broadbandreports.com/ has some good tools to see if everything is running like it should. And you can find out if you'r paying alot compaired to other services in your area.
I use their tests...but then I don't know what the results mean.

You're looking at the connection speed between your router and your computer, not your router and the internet.

When? and where did you get that information from, my friend said his 600 something connection was going up to 700.

Maybe this means I will get 30kbs on downloads... which means more porn.

Uh,, your poles dont go even near my speed, i got 3mb/s download speed, and this is only a house computer. Not a business place. I got Comcast digital cable. I am currently only getting 2.6mb/s on the speed tests. There is a guy coming out to my house next week and will take a look

What i read about NTL is that the connection speed is going up by a certain % (=<50%), not double

56k, visit some sites, for downloading I rarely take on anything over 100mb, and if I do I leave it going overnight (for a few nights =/). At the moment I'm still downloading the HL2 E32004 demonstration (the 390mb xvid one), completed about 90mb (22%), which has basically been downloading while I was playing Farcry, and I'm up to the "Control" level in the sewers

I would love a better connection, there's always tons of stuff I'm wanting to download but don't have the time or inclination. I could afford it too, but you can't get it where I live
