Basically i was wondering how much of a difference there is between a tablet and a mouse in terms of ease of drawing,

I find it quite easy just to use my mouse as the only tablet i used was when i was working during summer hold and that was really weird :p ( was a purple thingy, maybe wacom)

I dont plan on going out and buying a tablet just of yet due to the obvious price restrictions and the slight problem, if my teachers will accept photoshop work as " art" in there view .

Thanks if you can help me out :p, back tomorow after some exams to find out if anyone does.

tablet is natural, mouse isn't.

There's really no pro's for a mouse over a tablet when it comes to drawing.

Oh and if your teachers don't think photoshop work is art. Send them to cgtalk and conceptart.org and let them post what they think.. They'll be shot down by countless people making more in a week from photoshop art than your teachers could in an entire lifetime.

Then laugh at your teachers :)

If that's the opinion of your teachers Joims, they are doing you more harm than good. Blinkered old cretins. At art college we were encouraged to use computers, not criticised - and that was 2 decades ago ffs. Nowadays teachers should know better and recognise computer art for what it is.
Get a pen 'n tablet and hit them over the head with it repeatedly until desired squelching sound is achieved.

Actually, you might as well stab their "eyeballs" with the dang pen :p

PS I didn't use tablet, that's why I must draw manually then scan it in :( It's out of my current budget ;(

I've always considered getting a tablet, simply to cut the damn scanner from the equation. Blasted thing.

Although I can sketch, I've never been any good with Photoshop or its equivalents- I'm just overwhelmed by the sheer volume of... stuff. Plus, I don't actually have a copy of Photoshop. Might have something to do with it.

But for the record, what sort of tablet is best? The variety is disturbing- are some just overpriced, or are the hideously cheap ones insensitive and downright impossible to use properly?

Wacom is probably the best, Intuos2 or Intuos3 if your serious, Graphire if your semi serious or don't want to spend too much to start with. The quality is high and you get more than you pay for in any case.

Also the wacom's are pretty sturdy, so smacking teachers upside the head with them doesn't result in damaged tablet :p

Teachers can be annoying, especially Art/Design teachers. They all like Macs over PCs. Idiots.

How can you draw circles or somewhat straight lines with a mouse? It's almost impossible.

Teachers can be annoying

A voice of wisdom....
This reminds me of the one time where my Art teacher tried to deduct my points for using Photoshop in my art piece...:( That guy sucks at using computers, anyway :p

Mouse vs Tablet

the one on the left immediately conjurs disestablished parliamentarianism travelling along a conjugal paraverse, sustained by an overall feeling of melancholy within the green path of shmoo.
The one on the right is just 10 year old kiddie scribbles.

Heres all the stuff i dont on ps not really any of its relevant to the stuff im doing at school, all done with my mouse :p

edit: meh need hosting if anyone wants to see it pm me with your email and ill send it to you.

heheh :p

u can draw straight lines in photoshop with a mouse it just invovles the shift key

I'm useing a mouse when i draw in photoshop...its really hard and annoying sometimes..*sigh* i always wanted a tablet, but it's too expensive in here where i live so i'll keep daydreaming...lol

Drawing with a mouse requires patience...ALOT of patience.. :O

Lol, I don't do art, why bother. It won't gain me anything - I know Im already top of the class :D

You actually use a mouse to do those pictures you do?

woah... I'd almost buy you a wacom out of pity, nobody should be forced to use a mouse for drawing things like that. I remember the long wasted nights trying to setup brushes to behave properly in painter, with no pressure or tilt, trying to smooth strokes and make them look natural. Its just so much more worth it to get a tablet.

Heck got a cheap genius model. I started on a packard bell, cheap, not very well built but it did a grand job.

Where is it you live?

Stop stereotyping teachers yew fewls.
And although A tablet can be inittially wierd, its indispensible once you get used to it. I broke my old one so now i'm tabletless for a while.

I just ordered a Wacom Graphire3 Classic tablet, can't wait for it to arrive, have no scanner, have no papers(RL ones that is lol), this'll be great!:D

graphire3 is below the intuos range, but its a perfectly good tablet. It's wacom so you know its gonna be good quality.

www.wacom.com you can check out the features and differences there.

Personally tilt isn't a big issue, and 512 pressure levels is just fine as far as I'm concerned.

What's tilt?
Say you were using the spray can or something, by tilting the pen you could simulate spraying it at an angle. End up looking kind of like a cone.
