Hey all, had a thread with similar intentions, but it was spelt incorrectly, and it didn't outline the specifications I wanted. So I created a new one. Stopped posting in it anyway, because I got a Deviant account. Haven't used that in aages though, so it hasn't served much purpose. Besides, it's always good having a place to store WIPs. Like the one below

It's currently just a vague sketch, and I'm not sure where it's going. I'm not too good with the whole painting things, and I generally just suffice with cartoony. Still, hoping it might go somewhere. I'm looking for a barely lit dark street kind've effect. Will eventually have a stranger standing in a trenchcoat by the lamppost. Should, hopefully, produce some nice lighting. Probably changing the lamppost.

It ain't that great, it's currently just an outline. Barely even a sketch.

Well, it's...good I guess? The perspective looks a little dodgy but that might be because I'm tired or because of the angle.

It just doesn''t seem like enough to start a thread about, especially since the wall has no detail.

A good, easy and 'cartoony' way to give that wall more substance would be to draw just a few bricks scattered across it, not really in any pattern (although draw more, and sometimes next to each other, nearer the corner). So you have mostly empty space but a few bricks standing out.

maybe start with a smaller canvas ? like 300 x 400 or something, ... and use colors, they rock.

If it was smaller, you wouldn't be able to get the detail in. And colour will come later. Probably tonight/tomorrow

Start by using a perspective grid, or a few straight lines on seperate layers to give you a sense of 3d space to work in. Once you've got that you can start loosley filling in details without too much concern over what it will look like, so long as you have the basic idea down.

Then you can start filling in colours, getting basic shapes in and refining them with shadows, highlights, and details. Don't worry about mistakes and paint over anything you don't like instead of erasing.

It looks like it could be interesting, update!

The perspective looks alright to me, it's just a bit odd, and there's barely anything there...

Also, what the hell are those 3 lines doing above the lamp post? Are they supposed to be telephone lines? Because they don't look like them to me

The three lines in the top will be the other side of the street. Looks like they're above the lampost because the lampost hasn't been finished . I just wanted an opinion on the perspective. More tonight (if I don't get distracted by Heroes)

That's a pretty hardcore corner you got going on there. About the perspective that somebody mentioned being a little odd, just remember that the parallel lines should move closer together as they recede back in space. Or whatever.

And I was in Manchester once. Your goddamn airport made me miss my flight from Germany and I had to stay there overnight at some bed and breakfast. I couldn't understand a word anyone said.

You seem to have an almost isometric perspective going on there.. that's right if that was what you were going for

3 point would be pretty dramatic for a low light trenchcoat figure kinda scene, so this should turn out ok.

Bitch to learn, though.

Unfortunately, you wouldn't notice too much, as it's all too close together. The far pavement is slightly smaller... however

Added shading, lighting effects to it. Lampost outline completed (mostly). Lots of banding left to sort out. Brick motif kept for later reference. Not sure how to do the light. Might leave this for a while and start on something smaller.

Hey, it's coming along. Is the scene supposed to be nighttime or a cloudy day? My suggestion if it's night, is just to remember that the lamppost will be the primary light source, so past where the light shines to, it would be really dark. If you know what I mean.

It's going to be night. You can see I've started to shade in the lighting somewhat on the walls and the street. Thinking I'll make it a bit stronger, though. I was starting to work on the curbs before I posted it. I do like that corner in the bottom left

I like the old-timey style you went for with the lamp. Up to this point I had envisioned one of those regular, hooked streetlights, but you surprised me sir!
