What exactly is a dual core chip? is it kinda like having two cpus?
 
it has 2 CPU cores rather then one, so it would be like having duel CPUs

is that kinda like intel hyper threading. And does the game have to support it for it to be used or will it not make a difference in game play at all.
 
Hypertransport you could say is a emulation of dual cpus or dual core.
Thought it doesn't have the same potential since it is not at a hardware level.
It splits the resources available to the CPU to use 2 threads instead of one.

It's like if your download wasn't going at the full speed so you open another download to fill the bandwidth of your cable or dsl line. Sometimes it will take longer to get both finished by having both running at the same time rather than waiting til one is done then start the next one. It's a communication/bottleneck issue related to resources and protocols (similar to HT).
Dual cores or Dual CPUs are like if your computer was hooked up to 2 dsl or cable lines. When you use more than 1 download you can go at full speed with both of the downloads using both lines.
 
when will this be out?
do you think that it will raise the cost of the AMD 64 FX?
Theoretically shouldnt that double the performance of a processor then?
 
Um it will be awesome in multitasking but will be the same for single threaded apps.
You may start to see Dual core CPUs in 2005. Both Intel and AMD have them in the works.

Cost won't be out of this world and they will scale the same as current CPUs.
They will be at a good price for how much performance they deliver.
I would expect 700$ for the top of the line and then 500,400,300,200 etc. Just like it is now.
 
HyperThreading is 1 physical die, with one core, and two logical CPUs. Dual-core is 1 physical die with one logical CPU per core, of which there are 2 (sort of). For multi-threaded apps, a dual-core proc. will perform substantially better than even a HyperThreaded one, much as any SMP setup would. AMD's working on dual-core, Intel is apparently working on dual-core Pentium M's, Sun has been working on multi-core chips for a while...

A game will have to support it. It's not hard to do if it's in the programmer's head early on. The original Half-Life though, for example, would see absolutely no benefit, but on the other hand if you were running HL and HLDS on the same machine at the same time, that's a situation where you would see a definite performance improvement (again, as in any other SMP setup). Dual-core makes SMP cheap (like HT) but effective (unlike HT).

Anyway it's a great way to give a huge boost to performance while actually reducing power needs.
