I know other people have had problems with this but I haven't seen a solution yet.

As everyone else I have updated all drivers and so on. What causes this and what should we do?

Driving me nuts! :(

Do you see the loading screen for a second before it crashes? in that case you have the same error as me. Dont know what it is though. I just sendt a mail to valves suport. Will post here when i get the reply.

I get past the loading and the game launches. It goes to the valve logo then to that blured split second thig. Then *crash* back to the desktop with no error message.

I have had similar problems. The solution for me was to downgrade my Nvidia drivers to an earlier release - version 61.76

I can now play the game in 1024x768 using directx 8.1 with no crashes or problems. Using a Geforce 4200 ti

If you have an older model Nvida card, try these earlier drivers - may help.

You might try launching the game with the option: "-dxlevel 80" or even "-dxlevel 70"

I am having the exact same problem - (Valve guy screen, loading screen for split second, crash to desktop with no error). Maybe we should list our configurations to see if he have something in common that could be causing the problem. My configuration is below:

Nvidia 66.93 drivers w/Coolbits2 hack
Desktop\Game resolution: 1600x1200 2XAA/8XAF
GeForce 6800GT
Windows XP SP2
AMD 64 3000
1GB RAM
Audigy1 Sound Card

I can say what I did to get HL2 started.

My Specs first out:
Athlon64 3000+ @ 3400+
1GB Kingmax hardcore DDR500 @ 482Mhz
Windows XP Pro SP1
Radeon 9800Pro (Running Catalyst 4.10)
Using both an Plantronics HeadSet DSP-500 (wich has an extern digital soundcard on the cord) and a Hercules Digifire 7.1 Soundcard. Booth running without problems.

My Solution to this "Crash to desktop after Blurry Screen":
I run a Desktop res at 1600x1200 wich kinda fubar things up... It seems that the game didn't like me want to switch from 1600x1200 desktop resolution to 1024x768 game resolution in one go. So what I did was to lower my Desktop Resolution to 1024x768 (same as game) and then started the game.. Voila ! worked like a charm...
I first had this problem when running CS:S for the first time... I couldn't get the damn this working in fullscreen. Did what I mentioned above and it worked.

FYI: The error message I get is "Failed to set Video Mode - Game will now Restart" And i get two buttons one "OK" and one "Cancel". Just clock Cancel and then do the all of the above.

Hope this works for you!

I think that what I'm experiencing may be different. Half-life 2 exits to desktop without an error. The game is set to run at 1600x1200 which is the same as the resolution of my desktop. I tried to drop the resolution as suggested, but it unfortunately had no effect. The steam update didn't fix the problem either.

Interestingly, the game was working for a little while, then just stopped. Also, CS:Source starts up fine. All other games work without a problem on my computer (Far Cry, Doom 3, UT2004, Battlefield Vietnam, Call of Duty, etc).

I am going to try reinstalling the game.
