I borrowed Dune 2000 from a friend a while ago. I expected this game to be a bit of fun; Command & Conquer on another planet without all the bells and whistles. I was pleasantly surprised.
This game is really great, even if the three factions are near identical. There's some stuff in the game that I?m almost disappointed are not in the C&C series. I like the way the building area is restricted to a few solid plateaus (would have certainly stopped sandbagging) and the ability to bulk order units at shifting prices through the spaceport is great.
The feature I think should definitely have been in the C&C series is the use of the carryalls. Carryalls in this game are actually useful. The only thing I ever used them for in Tiberian Sun is transporting mammoths and engineers. For those that haven't played this game, the carryalls in it are aerial units used to transport vehicles (should be familiar to Tiberian Sun or Tiberium Wars players). In Dune 2000 are better though. They will automatically bring harvesters to and from spice fields when not otherwise occupied. This cuts down hugely on transit time if the field is far away. Also, when you order a unit back to a repair pad a carryall that isn't busy will automatically arrive to bring it for you.
These things of course can be done in Tiberian Sun but require a lot more tedious micro-managing. Why the hell didn't Westwood make their carryalls in Tiberian Sun as good as the ones in Dune 2000?
Er...yeah...Dune 2000 rocks. Discuss.
