so i got a new DVD burner... it's an LG, dual layer burner. I already had a CD burner in place so all I did was replace it with the DVD burner.

the config is
Primary Master - HDD
Sec. Master - DVD burner
Primary Slave - DVD reader (Samsung)

But everytime i try to insert ANYTHING on it, it freezes. Virgin DVDs, movie DVDs, everything.

So i tried messing with the BIOS (everything was fine, so ... wtf) and then pulled the IDE cables. So Windows still detects two drives, both DVD readers. This is freaking me out.

Windows can do that sometimes.

Try changing your config to:

Pri Master - HDD
Sec Master - DVD Reader
Sec. Slave - DVD Burner

Right, after you've plugged it like that - go to the BIOS and set it exactly the same there. Boot into Windows.

Tell me if that's different.

IF NOT Try re-installing your secondary IDE channel.

rawr, thanks.

(come to MSN !... or to the "channel" in IRC)

i switched them.... the same problem arises, furthermore, it doesn't even identify as a DVD-RAM drive. it identifies as a CD drive.

Ok, so you have it set up like this, correct-

IDE1 - Master = HDD

IDE2 - Master = DVD Reader
IDE2 - Slave = DVD Burner

Did you try uninstalling the Secondary IDE channel and then re-installing?

yeah that's how it's setup..

I just set the burner alone just for testing, the drive DID (amazingly) accept a movie DVD. It also identified the DVD correctly as an empty "CD", plus it didn't allow me to record anything big on it.

if by IDE1 you mean primary IDE, yes, that's how it's setup.
how do i uninstall IDE channels :S

In Device Manager, you should see IDE/ATA/ATAPI Controllers expand it, and there are your IDE channels.. right-click, and uninstall.. reboot and Windows SHOULD install everything correctly.

what if it doesn't.

it will automatically install right... should i plug out the drives or something.

Just go to device manager, then go to the DVD/CD-ROM Drives section right click on the entry you want to fix and click uninstall.

On the next boot windows will automatically install the drive for you. Don't worry nothing bad should happen. :p

The same can be done with the IDE channels in the device manager as Badger said.

I think this is your problem as windows still thinks that your drive is the old one even though it has been replaced.

i've done it, well, i guess it was always kind of working, but now it's really working. RAWR. i just didn't get why the windows burning app didn't recognize DVDs as burnable. well it doesn't...

Don't use the Windows burning app!!!

It causes a HELL of a load of problems..
