OK I have an internal DVD player. Is there a way to only take say a 30 second clip from a movie? I guess it would have to be a software type player.... I dont know of course that is why I am asking. For example see the small "clip" below. Of course it could have been taken from a VCR to TV in which I have but I have a few "clips" from DVDs that I would like to archive. Thanks.

Does your DVD player support the VCD format? If so, use VirtualDub to cut out the clip from the movie, or if you already have the clips prepared use "TMPGEnc" to convert them to MPG format.

Then use Nero or another cd burning program that supports writing to VCD format.

So Virtual Dub will allow me to clip a scene off a DVD that is playing the DVD player that is installed in my PC? (just clearing it up)

And use another program to convert that file to an animated gif.

Sorry, I may have been a bit ambiguous. I thought you intended to archive the files as AVIs or maybe MPGs to view on CDs for use on a dvd player. To rip a movie from a DVD in the drive you want to use smartripper to download thr .VOB files ( http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/smartripper.cfm ) and then DVD2AVI to convert them to AVIs. [Sounds so complicated!] Not sure on how to convert to GIF format though, sorry. :(

*Edit: Skip the TMPEG bit, if you have the file in AVI use this software to convert to GIF:

No problem appreciate the help. I will ask the person who created the LOTR gif if he used a DVD or VHS. I have aVCR hooked up to my PC via my cable so I can always renif need be.

Thnaks again.
