DVD Installation problem

Just bought the retail dvd version and loaded onto pc, however after loading steam software and frigging around for more than an hour in attempting to config the actual game I cannot access any single player game files and all I get when loading steam is a web page showing you the retail versions of HL2 and prices.
What can I be doing wrong, I only want to play the game

What happens when you right click on the steam icon in the taskbar, select 'play games,' then double-click Half-Life 2?

Removed software and reloaded, this time I got to the registration details and successfully got the game to run-almost 2 hours to load and run the game, surely this cannot be the way forward.
I hope the game is as good as the hype
