got the same problem, i've bought the game and went home to play it
upon inserting the disc in the dvd player it wanted to play but it couldn't somehow... so i thought this was a bad copy or something similiar so i've brought it back and got another copy... same process happened and i still couldn't believe it and got yet another copy.. and it still didnt work

My dvd player :
AOPEN 16XDVD-ROM/AMH
OS:
Win xp home

I've upgraded the firmware to r17 (i think that should be the one) and tried again and it still doesn't friggin work!!! :/

DAMMIT! can someone help me with this? getting frustrated here

I had the same problem, my DVD rom would read a DVD but not the HL2 disk, phoned VU games and they told me to disconnect my CD RW burner as there was an issue with DVD and CD burners (unplug the IDE cable and power suppy to the drive and reboot) and lo and behold it then installed with no problem, well thats with the exception of having to wait for my game to be validated and for steam to unlock the game files

Hope this helps

Almost the same thing is happening to me, I'm so angry right now its hard to type. My CD/DVD burner can read the disk just fine and it installed everything well. I go to play the game after waiting for an hour of unlocking and it tells me No Disk Inserted. I was like WTF!? I then tried HL:S and samething, so I tried CS:S samething. I went to Valve and they had a no cd error. They said to exit Steam and delete the ClientRegistry.Blob in the DIR and then restart Steam and let it update. I did that and still the same thing! Please someone help I swear I'm about to shoot myself.

[EDIT]
I also uplugged my CD/DVD rom and replugged it back in, but that did nothing to fit it.

Hi. I got the same problem..
The DVD-rom wont read the HL2 dvd. Makes just some sounds and stopps.. I tried a lotr movie dvd and it read it... I have an LG dvd-rom.
Help!

I guess everyone else is having other problems. Not being able to play HL2 is killing me! I still get the no disc error and I have tried almost everything. I dont understand if I was able to install it just fine and it reads my DVD perfectly good, why does it think the disc is not in when I go to play?

Cheers for that tip, ill try the cd re-writer thing soon, seems logical but surely i buy a game i should be able to install it properly. IM SO ANGRY! we cant get past normal installation :flame: Anyways i think he meant dont plug it back in...leave it out for the installation.

I had a feeling if people recently installed a new grpahics card, more power is diverted to the card, and no a suffecient amount to the DVD lense(which needs alot) attempt to remove your graphics card and put in an old one, or something, and restart in safe mode and try re-install. After installation of course you can put the good card back. This is a slim chance this is the problem though.

Same Problem

I've the same problem; DVD doesn't appear when it's in the drive. The drive spins and makes odd clicking noises, but Windows thinks that there's no DVD there.

I've a Samsung CDRW/DVD combo; could it be a problem with copy-protection and combo drives?

Well I have a CD/DVD combo drive and the DVD read perfectly fine for me. I installed great and everything went good. I just cant play the game because it prepares HL2 then 2 mins later I get the error unable to authenticate original disc within time limit.

*bumb* nr 1 *bump* nr2 *bump* n3 and so on.

seems like noone has solved the problems regarding dvd's... :x

could someone be so kind as posting a list of dvd's that can actually read the disc ?...bump ?

including manufacturer, model name and so on....... :imu:

going to order a new *sigh*...

i dont know name of it but my older computer's dvd rom could autoplay & install HL2. i tried putting it in my current pc but it didnt like it(too old i guess).

and now my re-writer rom isnt workin(might need to check i plugged it in properly) and my dvd rom doesnt work at all. Urgh.

I was thinking about getting my grandma's old gateway DVD ROM and seeing if it actually plays on it. I had to do that for the DVD of UT2004 and it worked I bet it will work will HL2 as well. Now I just gotta wait for her to get home! Where did she go! Agh!

Dude the only dvd rom ive got that will run HL2 is a gateway one!. How weird.

put the dvd in the drive and restart your pc. it probably will spin up right then. try again if not working. I had the same problem..

Hopeful solution for ya

Hi had the same probs as you guys when i first got the disc. I solved it by changing my seetings for the secondary channel (primary for you maybe). To do this in XP (thats what i have) right click on my computer and select hardware. Then go to device manager and select IDE/Atapi controllers then double click on whatever comes up for you. On mine it is NVIDIA nforce2 ATA controller. Then access the channel that applies on mine was as above. I altered my setting to Multi word DMA 2 and now the disc runs sweet everytime. Hope this helps some if not all.
