DVD Region - limited number of changes??

I have an American DVD that I have to set my DVD drive to a different region to watch, but when I watch a UK DVD it has to set it back to that region. The problem is that it says I can only change the region 5 times before it locks on whatever region I set it to. Does this mean I won't be able to watch the American DVD ever again if I don't set it to that region?

Surely this is retarded and there must be a way around it. Anyone know any programs that can somehow reset the amount of times I can change the region, or is it built into my DVD drive?
