DVD-ROM failure?

I just bought a copy of HL2 and installed it when i came home with no problems. When I was going to start the game the DVD-ROM wouldn't read the dvd (it noticed that the dvd was inserted but it didn't run properly). And after a while an error popped up saying "Unable to authenticate original disc within time limit!". What's wrong? I looked at the dvd and the dvd looks fine! My DVD-DOM is almost 3.5 years old, can that be the problem?

i have the same problem...I had an idea why it might happen, but im curious to whether you have installed a new graphics card recently or other hardware?

i downloaded ythe newest nvidia drivers, did you do the same?

now I uninstalled the new nvidia drivers, and I still get the error!!

Maybe your DVD is too old and it can't support media what hl2 uses. Just a guess though.

OMG I can't stand it, mine says "no disc inserted" and it makes me so pissed!!!! I have a brand new freakin 16x dvd burner and it a new dvd rom and they both say NO DISC INSERTED when i gto to play, sure it installs fine and everything! BUT ONLY WHEN I WANT TO PLAY!

ummm...do you retail ppl. need the disk to play? because if you dont (i'm assuming you have the preloaded files now...) just enter the CD key through steam in the my games then click the Register my game files.

Retail buyers need the CD in, we spend more money and get hit with all the inconvenience... BS
