dvd to pc speakers?

im planning to get the audigy 2 plat. pro sound card along with the z640 speakers from logitech after i get some cash by selling 8 brand new pre-built comps to my friends. my question is will i be able to connect the optical out from my dvd play to the logitech z640 speakers so i can have 5.1 DB sound while watching movies with external dvd player and connect the speakers to the computer? of corse i wont have dvd player on at same time as comp. i just want my comp to be able to use the speakers for games and music and my dvd playto use speakers for movies. can anyone tell me if this is posible or if they have done it themselves?

right now i have one of the altec lansing 4.1 speakers. im able to connect the miniplugs to pc and dvd player at same time by using a few splitters and converters.

o yea... my dvd player is a panasonic dvd-rv32. it doesnt have a built in decoder so theres 2 rca audo plugs, a subwolfer plug, and an optical plug

I have the Z640 speakers, I haven't tried hooking it up to my DVD player, as it has its own 5.1 speakers. But anyhow, I see no reason it wouldn't work with a converter or two.

Basically, it's the standard setup, the only thing you'd have to do is use the converter to convert the audio in plugs to RCA audio plugs.. but sounds like you have a handle on that, not sure how you plan on hooking up the center speaker to the DVD player, though. That's a third plug, goes in the digital-in slot on your sound card.

As for the optical out, I'm not sure you can connect that to the Z640s, I'll take alook for you if you want

yea im concerned about whether ill be able to get 5.1 or dts sound with those speakers hooked up to the dvd player. if i try the exact setup i have now with the z640s by using the converters, ill only have stereo sound. in my dvd manual, it says the only way to get 5.1 or better is to use the optical output


i know that the dvd players with built in dts decoder have like 1 rca output for each speaker

can anyone else help me here?

I currently am a proud owner of the Z-680 system and the Audigy 2 Platinum w/ EAX advanced HD, believe me, if you are getting the Audigy 2 Plat. Get the Z-680. Otherwise it is a waste of your money. Plus the only way to get DTS is via 6CH direct. Fiber optic audio is somewhat clearer but it is emulated. The same goes for digital. Believe me, I never use anything but 6CH input, Fiber sucked and so did digital. Plus without the Z-680 you will not be able to take full advantage of your Audigy 2 Platinum. :bounce:

Edit: Sorry forgot to mention one more thing, your external DVD player will work fine with the fiber optic, the Z-680 has 3 input choices, all of which can be used, however not at the same time of course.

Edit 2: Geez i'm not myself today, OK last one, your Z-640 system, from what I can tell it does not have a decoder, this is bad, you basically have purchased a 5.1 and are only getting 2.1. Waste. Send it back, drop the few extra bills for the 680, it's external decoder will be able to at least emulate 5.1 through fiber. But you will only get true 5.1 through direct.....sorry man....

what do u mean by direct, i didnt understand that part. but i do understand that the z640s does not have a decoder so it wouldnt allow me to use an optical option.

#1 Direct input differs from optical and digital in a sense that direct has a cable for each output Front, Rear, Center, Sub. Most simple PC speakers use direct, it is effective and better sounding. Direct is also called 7CH or 6CH or 5CH depending on what you have.

#2 Your DVD player will not be able to reproduce true surround sound by using fiber. Fiber gives you emulated sound, meaning that the decoder will "guess" where the sound is coming from and which speaker it goes to, front or rear. That is why you have, or should have, some other off color connectors on the back, these are for HDTV's and Dolby Pro Logic, or DTS systems. Unfortunately the Logitech series will not support these outputs. So your best bet for highest sound quality is a DTS reciver, those are gonna cost about $600-$1,000 depending on size. Or you could stay with the "ok" fiber optic. I also wish there was a way to hook the Z-680 up to a reciever using 6CH.
