first I'd like you all to watch that, I love how Koreans treat gaming like a REAL sport, it's genuine over there, the real deal.. the U.S. still hasn't gotten over the entire 'video games are for nerds and social rejects' phase. Secondly I'd just like this thread to be an open discussion about any involvement forumites have had with e-sports, because this topic fascinates me.

ed. yes I know video is funny, but you get my idea :P

That was the most unintentionally hilarious thing I've EVER seen. Holy shit. I mean wow.

im a gamer and i think thats ridiculously funny

Holy shit...

I sincerely hope this isn't the future direction of video games.

IMO E-sports are just silly, and are about "abusing" the games to get the slightest upper hand possible (good example being Counter Strike).

I think it'd be neat to watch people play strategic Ghost Recon esque wargames in competition, ONLY if they actually played the games as they were intended to be played though.

He'll, i'd be up for watching people play CS if they played it HOW IT WAS MEANT TO BE PLAYED, and not in the nonsensical viral bullshit ways they do now.

But THIS whole "E-Sports" business is just nonsense to me. Kind of an insult to real sports IF YOU ASK ME.

more of a sport than many "real" sports out there, have to be smart and usually quick. The huge debate for me though is the spectator aspect and I'm not really sure I'd want to watch many games but I think it would really depend on the game.

I really don't care to battle the nitty gritty details with you, but I believe it's a genuine sport, with extremely talented players whom train both physically and coordination wise. I find the micro in RTS games incredible, none of that type of stuff can be performed by average players, it's an entirely new style of gaming.. check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wpytgk7DxA , these guys dedicate years to full time gaming to become the very best at what they do. And in the future devs will hopefully focus more and more (for e-sports oriented games) on designing games from the ground up to have new ways of perfecting micro (rts) and skills like rocket/gauss jumping into games. Shadowrun for instance, rock paper scissors style gameplay designed from the beginning to allow the gameplayer to design entirely new ways of playing.

The idea of E-Sports becoming mainstream intrigues me, I love it.

i think it could go somewhere, might take another 10 years or so though

I'm just saying that it's one thing to compete in games where the players don't even play the games properly, like counter strike, where they've turned a valid strategic FPS into a death match.

Things like "rocket jumping" and "gauss jumping" are the sort of "game engine abuse" I loathe. I could understand if you were playing quake or something, where the game was designed around said tactics, but people doing things like aiming above peoples heads in counterstrike to anticipate recoil, and parachute-jumping in BF2 from 20 foot ledges, are just abusing and breaking the games they're playing. I just hate how, when I watch "e-sports" videos, I see people using the former as LEGITIMATE TACTICS.

Don't get me wrong though, i'd love to watch people battle wits in Ghost Recon or Company of Heroes, or hell, even Counter Strike, so long as they play the game properly.

And don't kid yourself, video games, aside from bouts of carpel tunnel and hunger, are all mental. The only "training" you do in a video game is mental, where you learn to anticipate attacks and moves.

What bugs me is when people get overly serious about these gaming leagues and tournaments. IMO, calling games "e-sports", or trying to be an "e-athlete" for a living is just plain retarded.

Sure, hone your skills in your free time and compete in tourneys for cash and whatever, but I would believe that letting video games run your life in the former fashion is just plain dumb.

Really, I don't hate "e-sports", I just hate how they're currently conducted (and the name too... ugh).

I don't believe they are. They aren't "sports", they're "games". TBH, it's merely a label, but on a personal level, I wouldn't lump video games in with sports such as amature wrestling, or soccer/football (not American football. They've turned that into a video game :P). Sports traditionally have some sort of athletic component backing them. Video games traditionally do not.

Sports are games, video games are games, but video games are a different type of game. They're all psychological (outwitting your opponent, formulating complex tactical maneuvers), and are in absolutely no way athletic.

And I do agree, video games are oftentimes in no way fun to merely watch :P

WHAT I MEAN BY "I HOPE THIS ISN'T THE FUTURE DIRECTION OF VIDEO GAMES", is that I REALLY hope designers don't design games with the purpose to be "broken" and played in quake manner, just to make it easier for the games to be used as a "gaming" event.

QFT.

I just play games to have fun, sure profiting from playing them would be cool and all... but this whole e-sports thing is so ridiculously lame.

Watching people play video games wouldn't be entertaining in the least.
Unless they had games like Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament 2004 being played.

And calling gamers "virtual athletes"? What's so athletic about using a keyboard and mouse/gamepad?
There's virtually no physical exertion.

Well Sky TV have recently signed a deal with Valve to broadcast matches on Sky sports. So us UK'ers are gonna get to watch them too. Though I doubt it'll get many viewers, well, maybe it will. But I won't be watching :P

Don't forget the insane amount of girls they have sex with after they win.

Yeah, nobody wants to **** someone who got 67 straight consecutive kills in a row on Torlan in UT2004! D:

Nobody likes e-sports people just look at these guys.

Im heavily into E-Sports have been for many years. The US has a long way to go but its moving in the right direction with CGS.

I was into CPL and stuff back when I played CS but the appeal of e-sports has passed for me.

I don't really care one way or the other, and I don't plan to follow anything e-sports related. Video games controlled my life in Junior High and High School and I'm really trying to get away from that whole scene, prefereing to play games like STALKER and other good single player FPSs that HAVE AN ENDING.

Games that have no ending ruin lives.

Yours truly,

Ex-Diablo II, Counterstrike (original) and World of Warcraft addict.

This is awesome, I say let these e-sports continue (although I well never ever do it myself :p)

When I see western gamers, they look like... well, nerds. When I see Korean gamers, I see celebrities.

Damn clean Asians.

Case and point, taken from the same lan as above.

500 person event (sold out) and there where maybe 5 females max.

Heh, I wanted to be one too, until I realized I'm nothing compared to the pros.

I've enjoyed watching the occasional game of Starcraft via replay or video. I think it is interesting to see how the top players play. I doubt it is going to become mainstream in the western world any time soon though.

That's odd, because when I see western or Korean gamers, they all look equally nerdy.

Wow, how far we've come. It's finally gotten to the point where kids sitting in a chair playing video games consider themselves atheletes. I don't know which I find more humorous/pathetic, gamers thinking they're atheletes or someone spending their time watching someone else play a video game.

10 years ago half-life wasnt even out. i doubt itll be another 10 years from now before this kind of thing takes off.

Depends how you define take off. It's already pretty large...sometimes even the main stream media will do a news story on the CPL and other such events.

lol, me too. Why are they on fire

Obviously it's supposed to make it seem more exciting, but if anything when your playing a game your going to get a bit damp, not have your pants light on fire.

Im fine with e-sports as long as they stop using the name e-sports.

Competitive gaming. Thats what it should be.

Also, isnt poker considered a sport now? Thats the same thing, its all mental, nothing physical.

Eh, I used to really like games because it WASN'T mainstream.. Only a few people liked to play them, and now everybody plays them like only the nerds used to.. That's why I don't really play video games anymore.. Plus most of the stuff they come out with is shit.

Your pathetic and sad, ****ing low life.

E-Spots involves INSANE amounts of strategy, reflex, concentration and talent + skill. Just as much and more then some "real" sports out there. Don't know what your talking about kid.

How about reading the thread or spending some time actually researching e-sports before you jab it?

lol, I think inside we all agree with Fishlore really, no matter how much skill it takes, or how cool you think you are with your ninja mouse reactions, or even showing dedication and commitment for those prolonged sessions such as investing in a pee pouch, mental athelete maybe, but proper athelete status not granted.

It's hard to have variance when asians have a physical limitation :|

By this I mean, their hair composition/texture/color is pretty much the same accross the board.

This fukers all look alike. The diference between Western gamers and Asian games is simple : The get laid more often. The more you frag, the more you woman you get.
