E3 Game Critic Award Nominees

"Note on eligibility: Judges were given the option of "hands-on" gameplay time with all nominated games. Games shown in non-playable form were not eligible for awards."

Those buggers got to play HL2?

I suppose the playtest build - with the buggy and that wooden shed.

You might want to actualy read peoples opinions on halo, pick up any PC magazine and they all quite blatantly say it runs like a pig on the majority of computers, hell the X800pro only gets like 60 frames a second according to gamershell IIRC.

100fps in bf1942 not impressive? are you stoned.

The X800 had over 60FPS at 1600x1200. If you're running it at that resoultion on a 9600 you're asking for trouble.

My FPS in Halo is perfectly fine - no noticable slowdown, ever. It doesn't run anywhere near as fast as other games with comparable graphics, and you'll get no argument here about the graphics engine needing some optimisation. But that's beside the point. If you're getting 1FPS as you've stated then there's something wrong with your system. Bottom line.

And no 100FPS in BF1942 is not at all impressive. My computer can do that without breaking a sweat - at max graphical detail - and it's not particularly powerful.

Basically that's how it looks to me lol :E

Yes, the part where I said "It's not particularly powerful" certainly implies that it's... what? Really powerful?

It's weird because in 2003 Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 were nominated for best action game. Half-Life 2 won.

In 2004, they were both nominated again and Halo 2 won.

Weirdness.

Because Halo2 showed awsome multiplayer this year, while HL2 was same, just new demos like last year. It was great that HL2 got nominated with essentially same old stuff again

He never said it implied that, he said it implied your PC is better than the other guy's. Not that I am saying that is the case, of course ;)

And the results are in....

Best of Show - Sony PSP

Best Original Game - Donkey Kong Jungle Beat

Best PC Game - Splinter Cell 3

(it's not looking good :p)

Best Console Game - Halo 2 (excellent....)

Best Peripheral/Hardware - Sony PSP

Best Action Game - Halo 2

Best Action/Adventure - Splitner Cell 3

Best Fighting Game - Def Jam: Fight for New York

Best Role Playing Game - Jade Empire

How did the PSP take best in show? I thought Nintendo made an excellent display.

you mean the original half-life, HL2 hasn't even released yet...

You can win best online game without being released?

Well, I guess it'd just be weird, we know all the really popular mod's will be available in the new engine, I guess it's not really a new game then.

But my previous statement is still true, just not all that relevant. You can win best online game without being released.

Did anybody really expect HL2 to win this year? Last year it came out and dazzled everyone with it's physics, AI, character animation and how original it was. This year we've had games already touching on the things HL2 promised not to mention jaded gamers due to the leak and delay.
What we did get the year was the more subtle, little things that mainly a HL fan would appreciate (the expository scenes, Eli, Alyx, Mossman and Father Gregori acting a few lines, a look at some new weapons, etc). This can't compete with the hands-on, brand new material of other booths.

nah, it wouldn't be fair to the other games if it won again. Nominating is fine, but awarding another award for the same thing... nah.

It has to come out so it can win game of the year 50 million times.

I hope all of you had read the rules of this contest?!

In order to be eligible for consideration in the 2004 Game Critics Awards, a game must be on display at the 2004 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, CA, May 12-14, 2004. Games shown off-site and in private meeting rooms are eligible along with those shown publicly on the show floor.

Playable Format
In order to compete, a game be shown in playable format. For the 2004 awards season, playable format is defined as the ability for the judge to manipulate a game in real-time while running on its native platform (i.e. "hands on" gameplay). Games that are only demonstrated on videotape or through screenshots, concept art, rendered movies, pre-scripted (i.e. non-interactive) gameplay sequences, or developer-controlled theater demos are automatically disqualified from consideration in the major award categories. However, non-playable games are still eligible for Special Commendations in Graphics and Sound Design.

Note on eligibility: Judges were given the option of "hands-on" gameplay time with all nominated games. Games shown in non-playable form were not eligible for awards.

Half-Life 2 was nominated for 3 awards. Thus it was eligible.
