anyone know what res the e3 presentation was playing at? and what kind of settings were on?

1300 by 700 or something, NO AF AND NO AA

I think everything was maxed out, resolution was 1024 by 768 ppi.

I dunno what res it was running at, but it was pretty high res. I'd guess at least 1280x. Settings? Settings were all the way up but AF was off I think...

AA may have been off too... but to me it doesn't really matter because once the res is high enough... putting on AA is just a waste of power...

no fsaa no af and some crazy plasma screen resolution.

It was on a widescreen plasma monitor, so it wasn't at a normal res. It was around 1300x700 or something, like jhero said.

Check the valve info thread: I think Gabe says something about it there

im getting a 9800 pro and i run all my games at 1024x768, or the res above that one (1100x??*) would it be worth turning on the AA and AF? and why arnt they already enabled on the card?

more important is that the res of the new*old* footage valve will release will be 1024*768. am i right?

Of course it would be worth it, they drastically improve aspects of a game's graphics. Anti-Aliasing will remove jagged edges, and Ansiostropic Filtering will make far away areas seem sharper and clearer.

grompl: yes. Pretty close to what the game will look like.

nest best res after 1024x768 is 1600x1200. If you do get a 9800pro, then do turn on AF and AA as it will improve your performance(compared to nVidia).....or at least that's what the tests show.

Uh, there's no way it will improve performance, but the card will hold out very well with FPS counts.

are they just in the card settings or would i have to get a tweaking program? (like the geforce tweak utility i currently have)

2048 x 1536 would be maxed out

but i guess they have to be fair for people with small monitors

Uh...oops. I didn't mean to say 'improve', but yes, it does hold out very very well.

I bet you HL2 will be like UT2003 demo. Everyone was wondering do i have to upgrade then when they played it an mx420 pci could put everything maximum and get nice fps.

They're in the card settings by default.

AA is worthless in higher res to me...

True, AA becomes even more redundant as you up the resolution, but it still does make a difference. It's just a case of balance the AA to the res, while maintaining a good FPS rate.

1024*768 with 8x af and 4x aa is perfect for me and my 17" lcd

jhero .... is there any point in turning on AA in an LCD monitor which can never smooth out jaggies to begin with? The only reason that its good to use is if you have a CRT monitor which can actually display the gradations between the "stairsteps". IF you're using an LCD especially with DVI in which each rectangular pixel can only display one color then does it help to turn on AA?

I have a 19" LCD monitor and couldn't tell the difference between AA and non AA at 1280x1024 resolution. Can anyone else shed some light on this subject?

How can you play in an LCD??? doesn't it get a bit blurry if you try to trun your view around too fast???? LCD's have shitty refresh rates.......

My LCD is good especially with DVI. And yes I can tell a difference when aa is on and off at 1024.

i don't think AA makes a difference once you're up at like 1280x+ it's really just not necessary at all. Waste of resources.

No matter how much you up the resolution the poly count on the models does not increase so a rough edge remains a rough edge. Thus AA is quite necessary.

AHA, so maybe the models in HL2 have high polys in which they dont need aa...

it actually does
you might not see individual pixels, but you do see pixel "walk" on polys that are nearly horizontal or nearly vertical. the it also allows very fine lines to show up as lines, instead of the "dotted line" that you see in most games when you look at power lines from far away. I play all my games at 1280x960, 4xAA, 2xAF, and if i ever forget to turn them back on after a benchmark, i can't even play the game. the difference is incredible.

also, when you're looking at little things in the distance in games, it's like a whole new world. You're no longer limited by pixels.

Hmm ... ok so I guess AA is useful if the poly count is low. I think if I look harder I might see a difference between AA and non AA.
