Earthquake in Haiti

That's alot of people. :|

Heh, you and I are both dead once the San Andreas goes. It's been really building, ya know? Even if we somehow manage to survive, we'll be living on the Island of California.

All I can hope is that the gays don't create some sort of provisional socialist government during the chaos.

They're already shooting each other again reminds me of 2005.

So far it's looking grim, the minimum deaths is at 100,000 people and reports are coming in saying its as high as 500,000 people. The U.N. headquarters has collapsed, along with three hospitals from the "Doctors Without Borders" program.

Also, the penitentiary on the island has collapsed with up to 1,000 inmates on the loose. Crazy...

Many fire departments in my area are being dispatched to the Haiti to help with recovery efforts, wish I could go, if only I was done with training. I have a few friends heading down there to help out too.

If you want to help, TEXT "Haiti" to 90999 = $10 donation to American Red Cross (charged to your cell bill).

I'm watching CNN right now... And they're showing dead people just littering the streets. :/

So those inmates are on the loose with the police occupied with the quake ? Reads like a disaster movie script movie to me.

thanks for the info, just donated $10 and it was almost too easy. I might do that again every couple days

AFAIK: Giving money to charities through companies that promote them means that said charity only gets 5% of what you give.

Whoa it's up to 500,000 now? Goddamn, they've beaten Sumatra! Good for them! Actually, that would make them second place for most deaths in an earthquake of all time. Going home with the silver ain't bad. (Although there might be some debate between this and the Tangshan quake of '76, official vs. estimated deaths)

They'll never beat the Shaanxi quake of 1556, though.

Help began arriving early Thursday when an Air China plane carrying a Chinese search-and-rescue team, medics and aid landed at Port-au-Prince airport, and more than 50 people in orange jumpsuits got out accompanied by trained dogs.

Damn Chinese stealing our thunder. THIS IS OUR HEMISPHERE.

Many countries are hopping on the bandwagon:

The global relief effort picked up steam Thursday with a British flight carrying a government assessment team and 71 rescue specialists along with heavy equipment arriving in the neighboring Dominican Republic.

Venezuela's government said it would send a military plane with canned foods, medicine and drinking water and provide 50 rescue workers.

Mexico, which suffered an earthquake in 1985 that killed some 10,000 people, planned to send doctors, search and rescue dogs and infrastructure damage experts.

Italy said it was sending a C-130 cargo plane with a field hospital and emergency medical personnel as well as a team to assess aid needs.

France said 65 clearing specialists, with six sniffer dogs, and two doctors and two nurses were leaving.

The U.N. is also providing substantial relief ($10 million), though they have to cope for major losses:

The U.N. headquarters building collapsed, and at least 16 personnel are confirmed dead, with up to 150 still missing, including mission head Hedi Annabi of Tunisia and his chief deputy, Luis Carlos da Costa.

They only have a very little time left to get the trapped people out of the buildings, before it's too late.

when you look at the population clocks, this week was a big drop. but hopefully everyone helps out and gets them back to where they should be. As the poorest country in North America we gotta help them out even more than expected.

it's amazing how quickly we have all come together to help, just like hurricane ka....

nevermind.

Google Earth has some stunning new photos which could help with the relief efforts

I am a bit surprised at the international effort but in a good way. U.S. has send 3,000 soldiers and 2,200 marines I believe. Japan, Brazil have send aid. EU states and China have sent rescue teams.

natural disasters are preemptive measures. nature is fervent in its cause to take care of the unpleasant task of preventing or at least slowing down overpopulation. something we aren't able to do, even though we know it's necessary in order to ensure the survival of the abhorrent species gaysapiens. it's the truth, and nature is brutal in its honesty. like alien lol, "unclouded by remorse or delusions of morality".

but it's still quite sad, because nature selected this concentration of people who already lived miserable lives. what did they do to deserve this? nothing. perhaps nature wants us to justify our existence on this planet. the nation in question is one of the poorest in the world. like it or not, the harsh reality is that they aren't exactly a contributing factor in advancing the society.

Are you suggesting that nature has its own will?

Millions of dollars in American aid relief for the Haiti earthquake disaster are coming from people donating money on their cell phones using text messages.

Text-message donations, also called SMS donations, are becoming increasing popular with charities because of their convenience for donors and the ability to spread the word quickly via social media sites like Twitter and Facebook.

The Haiti earthquake marks a watershed moment for the high-tech form of giving, which has been around for several years but which has become increasingly popular of late.

The American Red Cross has raised $3 million in Haiti aid relief through $10 text-message donations as of this morning, Wendy Harman, the charity's social media manager, told LiveScience.

"It certainly has shattered anything that we have done before in the mobile giving space," said Harman.

OK I understand Haiti is a big story but its been a week, what new developments could happen? Time to move on... I am personally getting sick of hearing about it all the time because its sad. Let's move on.

But all the network news and CNN and MSNBC can't stop talking about Haiti. I wonder why. It's because they don't want to talk about Massachusetts. FOX News is the only one talking about the senate race for a reasonable amount. The other networks are giving token coverage to it while spending the other 99% of their programming time on Haiti.

POLITICS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE COVERAGE OF RELIEF EFFORTS WHERE ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND OR MORE PEOPLE DIED TRAGICALLY DURRRRRR HURRRRRRR.

The death of 100,000 or more foreigners is obviously not as important for news as the coverage of a crappy political election or the deaths of thousands of Americans who died during 9/11 which was covered for a very long time after the fact.

the death toll may be closer to 200,000. hundreds of thousands are displaced. and people care about a stupid senate race?? our economic problems still seem like nothing compared to the devastation of a country that was all ready having a tough time. fukin' stupid people!

There's a lot of sarcasm in the thread from the more liberal posters, but yeah that forum is always full of complete assholes.

I read it frequently so I have an accurate bead on the level of "crazy" going on in the country at any given point in time.

It certainly seems convenient that when Obama is about lose 1 of the 60 Democratic senate seats, that all of a sudden out of nowhere a giant earthquake hits and kills 200,000 people.

Just saying, looks a little fishy to me.

Made me lol.

Facebook groups makes me ****ing sad. I mean, part of me ****ing dies when I see them.

"X moneyes to Haiti for every person that joins!" or "I feel for the people in Haiti" Really? God damn it I want to punch people sometimes...

I know exactly what you mean, people try to find popularity amongst the the tragedy. Both on Facebook and Twitter I've seen "If X people join I'll donate .20 cents" or "For every retweet I'll donate X cents."

Ridiculous... and also on the groups about "I feel sorry for the people of Haiti" Then do something about it! I hate when I see these groups and all they show is pictures and posts of the destruction and no where do you see a link for donations or anything.

in a way this disaster has brought many countries just a little closer together...which is a beautiful thing to see, despite it's reason for occurrence.

there's a video on the main page of liveleak (at the moment) justifying my comment but it won't fackin embed
