Vivendi (HL2 Distributor) was here in a recent mini show in Australia. My local EB dood went to it. And he played a HL2 level.

The EB dood said he isn't allowed to tell me about the game but he told me anyway.

Now it was the level with the Strider and the bridge. Now correct me if I'm wrong but did the strider blow up the bridge in the e3 demo? If not he did in this level.

Apparently the strider tryed to get under the bridge but couldn't and he just blew it up straight away. I'm sure in the e3 movie he just went under or something.

EB dood said the game handled very well and was very smooth on a average machine.

EB dood was telling me he is a major HL fan and is really excited and is part of the community and he said it's better than what he ever dreamed of. He said it's very very very special game.

i bet the bridge blowing up is in the E3 demo and i've just made a complete fool of myself.

One thing he did say though. The strider was minding his business but then he shot at it and the strider THEN went after him.

Ummmmmmmmmmmm........ He's lieing. First off, the Strider DOES blow up the bridge, but fails at blowing it up enough for him to pass, so it goes under it instead. Secondly, there is no playable version of the demo, those were prerecorded demos of the game. And lastly, why is it always EB people who claim to have played HL2, claim to know the exact date HL2 is going to be released on, etc and are always proven wrong with a simple email to Gabe himself? Or better question, why is there so many people out there who believe these guys?

Yeah he claimed November 1st release date. Sawe it on the desk screen myself. lol.

I told him Gabe hasn't said anything of the sort. He was like wtf. lol.

Yeah that is what I was getting at. He said it was different from the E3 video.

I don't know this EB guy sounded genuine. Apparently the Vivendi crew wern't even going to allow people to play the game.

Valve tell off Australia Vivendi. heheheh.

There was a playable version which was exclusive only to certain magazines

It's strange how at ECTS there isn't going to be a playable demo despite the fact it's a very large trade show. It's actually the European E3. Yet, some store manager (Or Salesperson or whatever) went to a "mini show" and got to play a level.

Don't you think?

Quotidiansucces, don't flame people.

AI only changes if the demo was real time and NOT a prerecorded version. Apparently that point of my post completly slipped your mind.
But thanks for being overly presumptuous and reverting to name calling. Keep it up, so far from everything you've been posting on these forums you'll be banned in no time at all!

He said he played it according to you. Show me facts and evidence. Why would a small showing of HL2 have a playable version, and not the big tradeshows? Why would he be the ONLY person who got to play this made up fantasy? If others got to play it, there would be a recording of them playing the game, as that would be completely new footage of the game in action. Since there isnt, and since nonone else has yet to claim they have played it, questioning the validity of your post is highly recommended. Oh, and don't bother creating a new account on these boards with a first post of "I just played the HL2 demo!" That kind of trick will be too obvious now.

crap.. the fab 5 from "queer eye for the straight guy" just came rushing through my front door, and they say it's because I read this thread.

I actually think it would make more sense to have it at a small show. I'm not saying this whole claim about the demo is true or false, but wouldn't u think if they were goin to have ppl playing the demo they'd want it to be very exclusive?

wasn't a small playable version alowd for only magazine's? .... duh *cuagh*adam*caugh*

Look, lets say there was a small playable version. Whats an EB clerk doing in Austrailia at a magazine press only showing of the Half-Life 2 engine? It still sounds flimsy to me.

My mom was at the recent mini show in Australia too! she said that she played the dock sceen and it sucked :\

Maybe show was a bad word for me to use.

He did say words like 'private screening' and stuff like that. Maybe it was just a verry exclusive top notch screening.

Peoples it's very possible he did play it. I mean the EB dood seemed honest enough and normal. Not a real geek or anything.

You have to be really really weird and physco to make up 'oh yeah i played it' when he didn't. That's just strange.

You just described half the people on here.

It seems so far that EB guy was just messing with your mind.
Why would they release a secret playable demo in Australia and not really tell anyone?

Because they want it to be a sort of exclusive for those 'certain magazines' ?

Why is it so hard for everyone to believe that Vivendi is promoting HL2 with a playable demo for their retailers? The retailers have a big say in how much promotion a game gets, in-store, on their website, in their print ads, etc. A publisher has to hype a game up for the retail chains so those retail chains will hype the game for consumers. A playable demo for these hype-shows is pretty likely.

and they would have them play and show them the exact same thing as what was in the E3 demo which everyone on the planet has already seen 30 bazillion times? blah.

Um, yes. You think they would keep it a secret for 5 years, carefully plan out the scenes to show in the E3 movie, carefully control the infromation given in interviews and to magainzes, and then reveal all new scenes to a bunch of store managers from EB and GameStop? Pfft.

Besides, don't tell me YOU wouldn't jump at the chance to PLAY the strider scene, no matter how many times you've watched the video.

Sure I would, but I then wouldn't break a non-disclosure agreement like the guy above, and do it by telling people exactly what they already know with ZERO new details. Not worth the risk eh? Doesn't sound real.

Teh G-man is real and he was watching the EB guy and the EB guy wasnt supposed to live but he did and now hes got the real info on the game and he comes back with, it playes well and the strider is not ur enemy till u piss it off................................................If you believe that there is a toaster thread u might wanna look over

Alright, fair enough.
Anyone reading this forum work at EB? There's got to be someone. Speak up, you EB-insider forum-lurkers! Have you heard anything about Vivendi presentations?

I'll repeat what I've said loads of times. (Once I think... o_O)

I'm a sadistic ****. If I worked at EB and I had fan boys coming to me all day, every day asking me if HL2 will be released on this date, that date, what date, will you go out on a date with me then just for the sheer fun of it I'd say:

"Yeah I'm afraid it's been delayed, it won't be here until 2005 because they've started again. Yeah, the biozeminades got into the system and they just ****ed it all up dude. It's sad I know, but at least it'll be here soon. And hey, let me tell you, I had a chance to play it before it got wiped and it kicked ass. Yeah it was at that private showing down in Austrailia run by Vivendi, brilliant event. They announced that CZ was going to be HL2s multiplayer too but that'll probably just be released as normal now. No that's actually delayed until 2004 Q3 now, where did you hear that? I wouldn't trust Gamestop you know... The retail assistants there don't get told anything because companies found out they were giving out false information all the time."

I'd say it with a straight face making it sound as truthful as possible. Then I'd log on to these forums that night, laugh my ****ing ass off at all the threads made on the subject and then print them off, and post it on the bulletin board of the staff room, and laugh even more whilst smoking a cigarette in my nasty little EB uniform, in a stinky damp back room, skaggy staff closet, drinking white coffee with 4 spoons of sugar.

If there actually were any 'private screenings'... your average store clerk would NOT attend... heck, just talking about little private screenings in the first place makes me feel ridiculous...

Vivendi Man 1: "Okay lads, we're going to show Half Life 2 today, to generate media interest. Any suggestions who?"

Vivendi Man 2: "How about someone from a magazine?"

VM 1: "Nah... too predictable"

VM 3: "A fan perhaps? From a fan site"

VM 1: "Hmm, perhaps, but I don't like it"

VM 2: *thinks for a bit* "WAIT, I've got it. How about Bruce, the EB Clerk from Australia"

VM 1: "BRILLIANT, Send for him right away"

lol, exactly. :D

Anyways, IF he did play it, it seems plausible that it was one of the scenes seen on the video.

Really doubt the whole thing though.

This just shows how reliable these retailers are. By the way, I bet the whole things was just a "miscommunication"; the guy might have seen a presentation of the e3 video, or he's just insane.

I plead insanity. I know I'm not on trial, but it's allways fun to do.

I got to play a version of it last night. I was asleep, and gabe was a 40 foot purple dinosaur who kept trying to eat me, but I got to play. It amazes me how well the bump-mapping works on their dinosaur models. Amazing, simply amazing.

Thats one of the dumbest things Ive ever heard...good thing you thought of it before he went and did it...

EB guy told Kamakiri he played HL2...big deal. No need to jump down his throat. What kind of "facts and evidence" are you looking for anyway? EB guy to bring you a pizza and videotape of the whole thing?

EB guys is probably talkin out his ass, and Kama just told us what he said.

ya dude EB gUys are like gods. They get to play hl2 years before us and they konw gabe personally. THey also can be dubbed vivindi representatives.

you guys are full of it.

He said he played it on a laptop aswell and it still looked really good.

What really got me was how the strider wasn't scripted as gabe promised. EB guy said the strider wasn't doing much until he shot at him. And he didn't even try to go under the bridge he was so pissed off he just blew it up.

I reckon my local EB in a city of 85,000 people is telling the truth ok!!!! :p

Well my EB guy was able to answer the question "Will HL2 run on my toaster?" by having a demo last night at the local Funcoland. The only problem was that when the Strider went to shoot him with that distortion ray, toast went flying out of the top of it and hit the EB guy in the head. He says he doesn't remember anything now because of it so he couldn't tell me how awesome the game was, particularly when that big thing walks over to the guy, and shoots him and then goes over to the tunnel, with that crane. That was awesome!

Another note.

These articles where the writer talks about playing the demo (I'm thinking particularly about the PCZOne UK article) - I would expect that these people simpy saw the E3 demo played out to them, and wrote an article pretending they had played it, because it sounds more exciting and impressive that way.
