Picture this. It's 4:10pm. I've gotton off the train near my local EB, happy. My major test for this term is over, i've got money in my pocket, i'm about to go and finally - finally - obtain Half-Life 2: Aftermath.

I walk into EB. Look for the game. Where is it? There it is. I take it, move into line. A smiling attendant moves forward, grabs the game out of my hand, and pushes another box that actually has the dvd in it into my hands. So far, so good.

I move to the front of the queue. "I'd like to buy this game, please" I say. The register biscuit nods, takes the game, and scans it. "34.90, please." he says. I hand him a $50 note. He nods, takes another look at the screen, and says "Oh, and can I see some ID?"

"ID?" I say?

"ID." he says, pointing at the label on the DVD Case. "This game is MA15+. It's illegal for me to sell it to you without you presenting ID."

"Ah, crap." I say, checking rapidly through my wallet, noting the amount of cards that vitally don't have my date of birth on them. "Umm... ah, shit."

And I walk away a broken man.

So, basically, I guess you need ID to buy games now. Will this stop children obtaining games that they aren't legally allowed to buy? My guess is no. It does inconvenience customers - especially me, since I don't have ID yet, despite being 15, and I didn't plan too for a while. I had always thought that you only required ID for drinking, buying adult stuff, and driving. So making a game MA15+ and requiring ID therefore highly inconveniences me.

Does it inconvenience the people who are going to buy the games but are underage? Yes. But that's assuming these people are going to buy the game. If I were a younger than 15-year-old and I wanted to buy, say, FEAR. I wouldn't buy the game. I'd get it off a friend, or steal it from the internets. Kids are smart like that. Making it difficult for us to give you money is not going to win you friends among legitimate buyers, game retailers. Will I boycott EB? No. They're just doing their job, obeying the letter of the law.

But that's damn fustrating for me.

last year i got refused far cry because i had no ID on me, so i gave the game and my money to my mate who did, while standing at the counter, and got him to buy it. why the **** do they even bother, it's retarded, i get id'd buying a video game, but not at liqour stores ffs...

I've never had that problem and I bought Fear from them too. You need that look of determination on your face that say "If you don't let me purchase this product I'm going to ram it down your throat."

As if you didn't have a school ID on you.

No, I don't have one. Not just not on me. I don't have one. I have my school library card, but that only has a string of numbers on it. We only got the photoes taken for our student ID cards last week. I doubt we'll get them by the end of the week.

Meh, i used to get this problem a few years back, but since i got my Debit Card i just order online as they assume your 18 anyway + its cheaper :D

Heh, I have loads of ID cards, but I don't carry them around.

Nobody asks for ID here, even if its rated 18+, because no one cares. It's not porn, then it's OK.

Wow, I wish Australian society had that absolute relaxation of morals.

/EDIT Drackard, can you use a debit card to order off Steam?

Will this stop children obtaining games that they aren't legally allowed to buy?

I certianly hope it does, it's a step in the right direction so people like Jack Thompson will stop shifting blame. This is, of course, if shop-keepers actually enforce the required ID check.

Because in every developed country in the world except australia, videogame ratings are voluntary (eg, done by the ESRB), and have no legal enforcement. Over here in stalinist-australia, the government rates videogames. It's illegal to sell to underage people.

In the US, you can sell a 18+ videogame to a 9 year old and there's no legal punishment, because the game was rated by the industry body.

edit: Australia is one of the heaviest censoring governments when it comes to 1st world countries.

Lol. The only games we've ever banned were GTA (violence), Ghost Recon(Seoul destroyed), Mercenaries of War(NK threat), and like 3 others.

Yes, it is a step in the right direction. But what is to keep adults for buying games for children that are unsuitable for them? Or too keep children from downloading these games from the internet? Only common sense, and that is in far too short supply.

Although I'm still pissed I can't get Episode 1 without a parent or an ID card with me. I was so hyped up. : (

This thread wins, merely because of the term "register biscuit"

I said it was a step, not a major link.

Not if its a Maestro

I attempted to do that, but it refused to accept the card, which is a bit odd, because it is an affiliate of Mastercard :frown:

Well well, you people in advanced Western countries :p. Here, you can buy alcohol in a supermarket even if you're 15, 95% of the time, no one will ask for any ID.

Which reminds me, I still haven't played Ep One...

Haven't been asked for ID in the last 6 months. Not even for 18 games, films, beer. I'm only 16.

But I never told you this if I get caught.

It's been a while since I played Ghost Recon, but I don't recall fighting in Seoul. You might be thinking of Splinter Cell 3.

Failed to buy it second time round. Oh well. Time to bring in the older friends and their id...

Oops, yes. I meant that.

MAke sure its not picture.

I've never been ID'd for a game, and I've only been ID'd once for an R-Rated movie.

Heck, once I even ASKED the clerk if I should get my dad (I was 13 and buying Unreal Tournament) and he said it was no big deal and let me buy it anyway.

I like to watch the looks on the clerks faces when people do that :)

I've never had the ID experience, but then, I struggle to remember the last game I purchased in a shop. E-Tailers don't care, and Steam sure as hell doesn't care...

People don't ask for ID when you have a beard or 'stache!

Well it certainly stopped you...
I doubt they would give some little kid slack when they cut you none.

The only time I get asked for ID is when I try to buy a Mature game (17+, but my brother is good for that :D), otherwise they don't care..

A) I am a legitimate buyer... but I can't prove it. So it did stop me.

For about 2 days. I have it now, because a friend got it for me. :D
