Editing models

How do I edit an existing deathmatch model? I'm looking to just tweak a cargo crate so you can walk right through it (removing both end brushes basically).

I tried building my own cargo crate out of brushes and the various textures, but I can't get my head around aligning/rotating the texture so it looks as good as the preformed model. Is there a trick to finding the right dimensions of these more complicated textures? Even then, in game the brushes appear completely unlit and in the dark. Adding a few env_cubemaps around it still didn't seem to solve it.
 
Thanks. I noticed you used props/metalcrate001 as opposed to props_wasteland/cargo_container01, didn't even find that one! Can you see any difference between the two? I've yet to successfully align textures like props_wasteland/cargo_container01 where you have to rotate and shift to perfection, I guess it's just practice.
