ok here's the deal, I want to edit things in the game like enemy health, health given by medkits, power given by batteries, etc.

i was looking in the GCF files and found "skill" file in the cfg folder which is in the "source engine" GCF file.
so i changed medkits to give 15 health instead of 25 to see if it would work, but when i tested it out in the game it didn't work. after i exited the game i checked the file again, and it was reset back to what it was! and YES i did save it after i made the change.

so then i extracted a copy of the cfg folder and made the change to the "skill" file in there. but it still didnt work. so now im all out of ideas.

So does anyone know how to do this?? it's gotta be possible since i think the "eraser" mod does something like it.

ok i made the "skill" file read only (the one i extracted, and it wouldnt let me do that for the one in the GCF file) and that didnt work.

You can't change the skill file in the gcf. You have to extract it in the right folder \half-life 2\hl2\cfg\ but it seems you did that so... I don't know what else you can do.

I've asked this question on a couple other boards and no one seems to know the answer.......

WOOHOO i finally figured it out!! AND IT WAS SO EASY!!

all i had to do was put my custom "skill" file in the main hl2 directory
steam/steamapps/username/half-life2/hl2

DUH!!!
