Exciting day today.

Congratulations Egypt. Hopefully the junta can put together a free and fair election as quickly as possible.

I am getting all giddy from all the happiness. Al-Jazeera English is one big feel good show at the moment. Great moment.

Just look at that sea of waving flags! Incredible moment indeed.

Now the military high council is in charge, though. I don't know how well that's going to work out.

Supposedly, the military is going to remove the Emergency Law that Egypt has been under for decades now. Sounds good to me. Finally, the Egyptians are starting to gain their freedom back after fighting so long for it.

I am somewhat apprehensive still because Sulieman actually is the head of this council. He's a dangerous guy, I don't trust him any more than Mubarak. We'll see how it plays out, I really hope this isn't false hope for the Egyptian people.

I don't know how long has it been since I have actually been happy over political news. I mean it's always terrorism this, Obama that. I think this was a nice change of pace, you know from the usual hate filled American politics

IMO.

Well you're lucky you don't live here. All I've seen on the media here is how much hate the Egyptians have for us.

Wasn't it America that put Mubarak in power in the first place?

I'm genuinely asking if he did btw

No, he simply took over when Anwar Sadat was assassinated in 1981 because he was vice-president at the time.

Algeria seems to be next. There is a big pro-democracy protest planned in Algiers today. The current regime doesn't seem to allow it though and has brought out the riot police in force. More on Al Jazeera or the BBC.

The same in Yemen in Sana'a. Though both protests have been dispersed by government forces.

This is a good thing, parliament was filled with Mubarak supporters and the constitution was a piece of shit. With Amr Moussa and Elbaradei as rising presidential candidates and the brotherhood taking a backseat, the junta really doesn't have anything to fear other than the peoples wrath if they don't keep their promises.

I heard that Mubarak went into a coma recently at his home.

You can only suck so much life out of a country before you've sucked it all and you risk brain failure due to lack of nutrition.

Apparently a female reporter from CBS was brutally gang raped in Cairo a few days, anyone got more information on this?

"were no banana republic!"

sure is behaving like one though, I hope someone in power follows through on this and puts people in Jail.

looks like secularism lost out to stupidity.

Qaradawi advocates establishing a "United Muslim Nations" as a contemporary form of the caliphate and the only alternative to the hegemony of the West. He hates Israel and would love to take up arms himself. In one of his sermons, he asked God "to kill the Jewish Zionists, every last one of them."

Egypt you fail.
Lets hope Iran fairs better since they already know where theocratic fascism takes you.

I still hope that Egypt will come out of this swinging with a liberal minded, secular government. Turkey could do it, so why not Egypt? Granted, the circumstances nowadays are a little different, but I seriously doubt Tahir square protesters want to replace one corrupt regime with another corrupt regime, with just a change in leadership.

^ Bear in mind that Turkey had gone through a lot of shit in their 88 years since independence to get where they are now. The journey wasn't smooth, and it's far from finished.

You're implying Egypt has not been through shit times.

In any casae it would take generations anyway. Something like won't be worked out for a long time I think.
