I just purchased the Game of the Year Edition of ES IV: Oblivion, popped in all the necessary patches and mods, and when I started the game while offline, it crashed giving me an error message stating that the .dll ID code or CD Key not found. Then it just hit me not long ago after installation that I never punched in a CD Key. Upon further research, Oblivion doesn't use any copyright protection software like secuROM either. So, just what kind of copyright protection does Bethesda use anyways? I noticed the crashes and error messages stopped after launching the game online. Then I could just launch the game offline like I normally do with games after that first time. Weird.:rolling:

What do you mean by "launching the game online"?

I think the problem is solved. I know it's not a MMO, I have dial-up, I can't play MMO's. All the patches, plug-in's, and MOD's were downloaded at my University where T2 is available. Just thinking how some companies seem to be ditching the CD Key method along with secuROM lately and thought that perhaps that Bethesda was doing some sort of online verification method like Valve does with Steam or something. It is my first time playing Oblivion after all. I was getting strange errors about "CD Key not found" before I went online. Then it stopped.I didn't get the crash/error reporting messages anymore when I tried launching the game off-line. If it happens again, I'll take a screenshot and forward the error message along. I turned off Event Viewer under the MMC panel when it happened, so I don't have a copy right now.

oblivion uses a cd key??? i dont remember using one.

also securerom sucks balls compared to steam. with securerom you cant even use no cd cracks or images. its so hard for me to put the cd in the drive :(

Agreed. SecuROM was also the reason why FEAR's engine performed so poorly on most systems. But "What is Bethesda's copyright protection method for Oblivion?" is my question.

There is no cd-key or any activation what-so-ever if thats what you're asking. If you're asking what the "copy protection" (not copyright) is, then I dont know.

Well, why doesn't Oblivion use a CD Key then? What does it use? I thought it was a little weird that it didn't prompt me to enter a CD key. Also, I just updated my Forceware from 83.71 to 163.71 (huge leap, I know)because while playing for the first time and tweaking the in-game/ forceware control panel settings, the whole system froze, crashed, and rebooted. The first time that's ever happened to me. It seems to be fine now, but could those old forceware video drivers cause the entire system to crash like that? I uninstalled the old drivers in safe mode and used guru3D's driver cleaner to be safe(no pun intended), then installed the new drivers in safe mode as well.

Oblivion only has a disc check nothing else. No SecuROM or any similar service.

Except for Steam and SecuROM in the case of Bioshock. Also wtf? of course you can use nocds or disc images. What have I been doing for the past few years? There is no protection system that cannot be broken.
