eli and kleiner (in hl1)

you talk to him sometimes he says 'talk to me later and i'll buy you a beer' or something along those lines

I know that... but that is just "general security guard Barney." When I say "Barney Calhoun," I specifically mean the Barney that YOU play in Blue Shift, who never comes into direct contact with Gordon... at least not through either person's quest regarding the incident. Granted, Blue Shift Barney Calhoun MIGHT owe Gordon a beer, but I think the idea is that this Barney is "coterminous general-Barney."

Of course, but the only character in the HL universe called Barney is Barney Calhoun. You're saying Valve would create a second Barney rather than use the existing persona.

Yeah, you're right. Barney is called Barney Calhoun in all of the HL2 credits, as well as Raising the Bar, which corresponds with Blue Shift Barney. But, you never fight alongside Blue Shift Barney and HL2 Barney remarks "Just like old times, eh, Gordon?"

I guess the only answer is that either Blue Shift Barney was a coterminous Barney as well, or that we should disregard it, as it is Gearbox anyway.

"Just like old times, eh, Gordon?" could mean lots of stuff. I think Valve made a lot of the dialogue deliberately ambiguous. It's like the whole "does Gordon talk during HL2" thing.

I use to always believe that barney calhoun from hl2 was from blueshift. But after reading all this I don't which is right.

I just hope that he is from blue shift, just so that it will be nice to have an expanson that tie in with hl2. But who knows, you guys might be right abou him being just a bunch of barney put in one.

Was Blueshift Gearbox aswell? If so I have to forget another load of info
*banges head off radiator*

Just a thought... most people assume that Gordon never met Barney before.

As far as i remember, it's not his first day.

Would be funny though.

*thudthudthudthud* *CLANG* *PZZTTT... take out Freeman PZZTT*

Gordon: Come on guys, it's my first day!
Soldiers: Hah Hah Hah Hah! *Stops shooting*

Of course it's not his first day. Everyone knows his name. Who thought it was?

In the Blue Shift manual(which I have right in front of me.), a letter from the administrator refers to a Dr. Kleiner. But it has no first name. I can't find my original HL manual.

But on the other hand both the letters from HL1 and BS by the Office of the Administrator were signed with the initials "LM". Possibly a secretary, or second in command? Possibly the G-Man?

PS: If Gordon knew Alyx as a friend's little girl when he was 26 then started having feelings for her in the future, don't you think that would be robbing the cradle?

The whole "Just like old times eh?" thing was resolved to me, when someone suggested the analogy of war vets. Two soldiers in Vietnam may not have necessarily fought together, but in the general war they did, and they might talk about it as though they were together. Same as Barney Calhoun (The one person, not the general one) and Gordon may not have fought together, but both went through the Black Mesa Resonance Cascade and both are in the Resistance against the Combine, fighting for their lives, just like old times.

...did that make sense?

EDIT: Yea no mention of a first name for Kliener in the HL1 manual, just got it out, havnt looked at it for ages!

Just in case theres still any confusion:
Eli
Barney
Was going to take a shot of Gordon in BS, but I borrowed that from a friend so I dont have the CD anymore.
In case your wondering....yes I was bored.

Most of the people of HL2 wasen't intended to be in HL1,but for the story for continue on,they had to add some more people the game and when they say: " I worked with you in Black Mesa " ,that is all lies in the HL1 days.

Well from what I've gathered, from certain little pieces of info dropped, Kleiner has met Gordon before, probably during the Black Mesa incident, also It's my belief that Kleiner is the scientist who sends Gordon to Xen, you don't see him die. (the teleporter operator, which links in with him operating the teleporters in HL2)

I dont think Kliener ever went to Black Mesa. He was Gordons former professor at MIT and his only connection to Black Mesa is that he recommended Gordon for a job.

Alex was his professor.
Isaac was in Black Mesa.

So how come Kleiner knows Barney, Eli, has a headcrab, an HEV suit, and has a BMRF staff picture in his lab, which he is a part of?

For what its worth, Planet Half-Life says:
As fortune would have it, his mentor at M.I.T., Professor Alex Kleiner, had taken charge of a research project being conducted at a decommissioned missile base in Black Mesa, New Mexico. Kleiner was looking for a few bright associates, and Gordon was his first choice.

Right, straight from the horses mouth (or Marc Laidlaw!)

Marc Laidlaw said:
Our intention, after the fact, is that Eli and Kleiner are the two scientists you pass on your way into the chamber, and on your way back out: "It wasn't meant to do this in the first place!" Eli opens the retinal scanner for you to return. The scientist with him is Kleiner. This is all highly revisionist, of course, because in a sense they were all Kleiner.

The original e-mail.

The scientist with him is Kleiner.

So Kleiner shaved his mustache, shaved his head and started wearing thick glasses? Mark Laidlaw said so.

Considering that the scientist with Eli was not the glasses-wearing scientist that the Kleiner model corresponds with, but the old, mustached, Einstein scientist that we only see a model for in HL1. I guess Kleiner has undergone quite a few appearance changes over the years.

I mean, he USED to look like he does now... we see him as a young guy on the Science Magazine. His nephew even drew a picutre that represents the bald, glasses-wielding scientist that he is.

But, in order to fit this evidence with Laidlaw's response, I am going to have to assume that Kleiner went with the Einstein look for a year or two. It must have been the popular look at the time, and he wanted to fit in. Or maybe he really was headed in that direction, but after BMRF changed his appearance back to glasses-guy in order to commemorate his lost colleagues. I guess this means that he could be one of two people in the picture of the BMRF staff in his lab...

Maybe Marc Laidlaw was tring to add intrigue by putting his initials in backwards?

The Einstein look was very popular, many scientists at Black Mesa had it. Or maybe it was part of their dress code, something like: "In order to think like a team, we must remove all look identical."

Cryogenic freezing can cause such odd dilemmas...

About this whole kleiner don't look like the einstein model in hl, it's quite simple, the einstein man took over Kleiner's identity at some point, he was killed by Eli after he discovered what was happening, Eli being rather bad with faces he did not notice his dear friend looked completely different, bu once he did he bludgened him to death with a large computer monitor. He then fought through heards of einsteins manical diabolical minions, including a nine-armed, five headed octopus/human, armed only with his toothbrush and a standard Black Mesa security pencil. Once he rescued Kleiner, Kleiner told him the secret password to einsteins evil research complex self destruct mechanism. He entered it, leaving them both with just twenty seconds for an exciting escape. At the entrance, just metres away from daylight, the emergency doors started closing, Kleiner quickly jammed his super strong titanium alloy glasses underneath the door, stopping it from closing while Eli crawled through, the glasses broke and Eli quickly reached under the door, grabbed his toupé that had fallen off, put in place and they both jumped into the Eli-mobile, driven by six-year old Alyx, finally escaping in a spectacular fire storm!

It's all in Half 1, you just have to look closely.

Barney Calhoun is the first Barney you see in HL1 (you play as him in Blue Shift).

Then who is the guy who says "Hey, catch me later and I'll buy you a beer" near the anomolous materials labs? Wouldn't that be Barney?

No, you play as Barney Calhoun in Blue Shift and you are the barney who is stuck outside the door.

OK, there are a few holes between HL1 and HL2, however I think they're necessary evils in order to connect the two games. Since in Half-Life 1 character development of the individual scientists was quite minimal (since there were no cut scenes or long dialogue sections) which was required in order to give Half-Life the feeling of urgency I think VALVe were forced to take a few liberties with Half-Life 2's story.

i just looked at them, you're right. Breen's first name is Wallace!

Some friends and I had a long disscussion about this.

We came to the conclusion that Dr. Kleiner was one of the scientists in the observation room. (Where those people told you to throw the switches in the test chamber.) Right before Gordon entered the chamber, Kleiner had to rush off for some other business. Later after the accident, Kliener and Eli met up, and then split up to look for Alyx and Eli's wife. After the search, it was apparent that while Alyx was safe, Eli's wife was killed.
They then escaped.

We also came to the conclusion that Barney Calhoun drove like a maniac on speed until he and the scientists reached a city. In this city were Kliener, Eli, and Alyx, all of whom Barney knew.

And then the invasion and blah blah blah . . .

(As a sidenote, Gordon and some of the security guards probably went out for a drink after work every night. ;) )
