The Empires mod has released an official trailer showing 12 minutes of gameplay, with tanks, rockets and machine-gun combat galore. More than that, the release date has been fixed for March 4th.[br]
Empires details the struggle between the huge and powerful Brenodi empire and rugged, resourceful Northern Faction and is one of the most prominent of the new crop of mods that combine RTS and FPS genres in one. Here, players will be ordered around by a commander, and be able to build walls, defensive structures and factories to churn out tanks and jeeps.[br]

At that length, I'm guessing the video is another uncut, drawn out trawl like the last one. Why can't those guys release proper trailers?

Mod looks ace regardless. :)

WOW, I just watched the trailer, first time I've seen the mod. I'll probably give it a go, looks pretty damn fun from the video. Models look wonderful, and its nice to have a new type of mod around not the same ole' CS-kind of mods.

You know what they say about assuming?
:p

Watch it.

Anyway, I like the combo of BF2 and C&C it seems to have.

I can't waiiiittttt. I've wanted a game set in a modern world with RTS and FPS... Savage was good, but I didn't like it as much. This looks awesome.

Looks cool. I really like the tech and the way everything fits together.

A few things I noticed: The maps could really use some distinguishing features and landmarks. It's like desert, hill, desert, hill. The 3d skybox & skies could be better utilised to give a sense of scale and build a more complete theme.

The voice acting is lacking. We're currently going through the same sort of stuff on FF and sometimes you just have to realise that someone else can do a better job (my own medic calls just got replaced by MrBeefy's, as they were definitely more suitable). At the moment it sounds like people spotting tanks and calling for medics are laid back or something. If you're in a war, there's a sense of urgency, excitement and, at times, desperation! I realise these may be placeholders, but getting some better sounds would increase the mod's appeal a lot. I'd recommend finding someone with a nice deep / gritty voice and a decent mic and letting them do it :) Look at other mods/games and study the way they have approached the voice acting. Battlefield 2 is a good example.

Some of the sounds seem to be HL2 stock (rocket firing etc) and it kinda results in people pricking their ears for more familiar stuff rather than being immersed (we have the same problem with a few sounds, and it's something we hope to fix).

Additionally, the crosshairs look pretty obtrusive, as do some of the weapon models (the RPG reload seems to get in the way of seeing where the rocket is going, for example). Anyway, just trying to provide some kind of constructive feedback -- it's always easier to see the negatives than compliment the positives.

Nice job to the Empires guys, I'll be sure to try this one out :) The scope, scale and the way in which everything ties together looks very well done.

@Sufferin-rebel

The music is from the soundtrack of "The Rock" (movie with Sean Connery & Nicolas Cage iirc).

The whole of it?

Including the bit after "If they want a war, they'll have a massacre"

Wow...a mod actually being released! Amazing, I thought these days mod's were just unpaid deveopment teams, that spent years working to never release anything.

Been looking forward to this one for ages! Glad to see a release date, you never know, they may set a trend!

Eesh, March 4 D:

Was hoping it be released during Feb. vacation... Oh well.
Downloading trailer.

Man I'm so pissed of I'm at Uni. So far I've missed Dystopia, The Hidden, MoveIn!, I'm going to miss MINERVA: Episode 2 and now I'm going to miss this too because they won't let us use Steam. :monkee:

It looks really good.

Thanks for the praise. About the voices and all the other nuances that you might not like, we're putting it out so people can play and give feedback. We have plans all the way up to a 2.0 version so it's not like we're done after this first release.

But what did you do with the netcode?
HL2's defoult network settings cant handle so much action without lagging the server and what is the playble player max?

Well, we just tried to be as efficient as possible with the net code. We didn't really change anything that was already there, just added new stuff for our own features. The most players we've tested with is 14, but the official server will be running with a 32 player limit and closely monitored on release. It should be able to handle it. Once, one of our testers built an ungodly amount of vehicles and that was actually straining the server. I added a server side variable for defining how many vehicles each team can have as a result, so if a server can't handle it they can lower the limit (default 32 per team) on the number of vehicles.

I hope my computer will be working in time for me to play this at release time.

Congrats guys, looks very nice! Another mod to be released, keep em coming :>

I'm real impressed.. a couple new sound effects for explosions and vehicles and this will be on point!

Nice, something to play before RO:O

one question though, can you cap tech levels?

eg. level one apc's and light inf only etc

looks really nice!

only critique is that the hand models really look hl1ish, and the rpg reload animation is a bit weak, and from a weight/physics standpoint makes no sense.

i am looking forward to this.

Apart from the explosion sounds and gun models, looks absolutely bloody awesome.

Explosion sounds are too HL2ish and don't seem to fit in. Gun models just don't really seem to work, they don't look gun-like enough. I'd suggest using current-day guns and just sort of altering various aspects of them, drastically if necessary, but so that the final thing still looks more gun-like.

edit: Although the imperial (or whatever) guns in the last section of the trailer (the one with the fortress thingie) looked very nice.

I have been this ' ' close to joining the Empires team years ago in my bf42 days, so I'll always have a special place for them [glad I didn't though, or I'd've never made Off Limits :p].

Video looks impressive to me. I see a enormous amount of work has been done, not only creation of the content itself, but also wrt compiling, importing, definately coding, and getting it all to look right. I like the quality of a lot of stuff; tanks look like tanks (don't sound like em yet, but meh ;) ), it all feels very convincible, which is not a small feat for an RTS-FPS mix. It's a tad bit of a shame that there are a few tiny details that annoy, that wouldn't take long to fix [you really should do something about that explosion sound :p], but then again, since those things don't take long to fix, they'll probably get fixed very soon.

Great job, to Krenzo and all his team. From the looks of it you've succeeded in blending RTS and FPS believably in Source. I hope this lasts after release when your code will get stress-tested, and I hope you get a crowd that lasts. All the rest are finishing touches imo. Good luck on the 4th :)

Looks pretty cool. In my opinion the maps looked a bit boring. Too much free room. I hope they have a few smaller maps so that the action can get really phrantic.

I'll give it a shot. It looks like it needs polishing indeed, but what you've got so far is convincing. Congrats on making it this far team empire.

I finally got the video downloaded, and I must say I'm impressed. The gameplay seems really spot on, but the maps are a bit heavy on the endless expanses of plains. The rocket launcher had a weird animation, as someone said, but in the face of all the pr0nness this mod has, it's not much to complain about.

I'll be playing it next Saturday, to doubt about it.

That's from the movie The Man in the Iron Mask.

Dammit they're releasing it when there's going to be a huge party to which I'm going with my gf :(
Now I must choose between hawt, hawt luvin' or hawt, hawt gamin' :(

Very good! I can't wait.

Those large scale desert maps look awesome, some island ones with transport vessels or bridges would be nice. :D

Definatly need to sort out the sounds, I hate those HL2 buggy and explosion sounds. Especially a Tank with the buggy noise driving about.

There are two smaller infantry based maps in the release, and there is an island map with destroyable bridges. We could really use a new RELIABLE sound effects artist.
