Now idk if these are completely illigal or whatever so I'm just gonna ask.

BadgerEDIT: No requesting illegal stuff :)

To sum it up: they're completely illegal.

BadgerEDIT :E

They do exist but they can't emulate commercial games, or they do it very badly.

roms are legal for 24 hours, then you have to delete them..

Bad simmo *slaps wrists* now go and sit in the corner and consider yourself unwanted you naughty boy you.

Emulators are perfectly legal IF you also own the genuine article. So if you own a PSone and would prefer to play the games on your PC, you can legally.. but if you sold your PSone, you'd be breaking the law still playing them on the emulator.

Amiga emulators are legal only if you get the boot rom needed via legal means ie: paying for it, or making a copy from your Amiga computer. Since most amiga games are now abandonware by the companies who made them. You only need to worry about the boot ROM, which is still under certain laws. In this particular case, you can give away (not sell) your original Amiga, but you can't legally use the emulator at the same time as the original machine is being used.. Complicated I know but lets face it, nobody uses Amiga's really these days, just the emulators of them.

8bit computers, I don't know, Spectrum's and C64's I think are fine now. Consoles on the other hand I think thats where the 24 hour thing and/or must still own the original console and roms.

No, that's just a rumor/lie. You can't download copyrighted roms no matter what, even if you own the game.

Some of the older games are considered public property now. And I'm pretty sure you can play those, even if you dont own the original.
The programs themselves, are legal. Its just that most of the roms arent.

what i find completely rediculous is the fact they are illegal when the companies don't even make the game anymore so where are people soppost to get the games? off e-bay?

I mean if the companies still manufactured a very low amount of these games i could understand it being illegal but if people want to play a classic game how are they soppost to get their hands on a copy?

in that case the companies should make a special online service for those who wish to order old games

in response to matrix: thats a really cool idea. They could make versions of the game to go on your PC, and only do it for the classics. I mean ive wanted to play super mario 64 for ages but i dont have an N64 and i dont want to shell out £40 to get one second hand. if i gould get the game for a tenner online, then play it online with a USB controler or something that would be great- id happily hand over my money.
