Greetings fellow forumites!

So, for my International Studies class i have a project the teacher calls "A Social Awareness Project." For my project i chose to do a cross cultural study of different countries from around the world. For however many respondents i get, i want to match it with Americans.

For a run down of the project i am going to ask my subjects a list of questions pertaining to their daily life and culture.

So far i have people from:

Australia
Belgium
Milano, Italy
Holland
Germany (2)
Krusevic, Serbia.
Finland
Colorado, USA
Palm Bay, USA
Maryland, USA

If you would like to take part, please let me know. The more people i get the better my project will become. Feel free to PM your answers. I plan on making a video at the end to compare everything. It would really be great to have a lot of people from around the world take place. I came here because i knew we have a lot of international members.

Should take at the most 30 mins to complete.

Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Peace!

I believe our country does a fairly good job of looking after our citizens, adressing social issues, etc. But it's not so great at foreign issues. I feel we could do better on all counts, but we certainly could be doing worse.

What is your view on American foreign policy?

American foreign policy is too interventionist. We should maintain a friendly diplomatic role with all nations of the world, but we should not have a military presence everywhere.

What is your cultural metaphor for the USA? For example. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the United States? Be honest!!
The first thing that comes to mind is the flag, followed by the eagle-seal.

What is your view on the wars in Iraq in Afghanistan?
We should be in neither place. Both are illegal wars fought for illegal reasons.

No country should have a nuclear program, least of all insane and belligerent North Korea or theocratic Iran.

If you could change one thing about the world today, what would you change?
I would eliminate oil and replace it with clean fuel (solar, wind, etc. but NOT biofuel)

Name one thing in your culture that an outsider may find strange, or amusing.

We have this tradition where every year the boys in the school will give the girls ridiculously huge flowers. I am not just talking regular flowers, but like, chrysanthemums the size of your chest, which are covered in ribbons, bells, and various Texas-themed orchestrations. The boys get "smaller" flowers, each easily the size of a small dessert plate, with streamers and bells. We have to wear them all day. I hate them.

What in our future are you most worried about?

The environment.

Are you concerned with the resurgence in terrorism?
Somewhat.

Who do you feel is the best candidate for the 2008 U.S. election? And why?

They are not quite treated equally, but they have gained all of the civil and legal rights of men, but do not have the same pay or ability to gain promotion.

Children are expected to be educated up to age 18, and are expected to obey their parents and stay away from drugs, alcohol and sex.

No. Homosexuals are slowly losing their social stigma, but they are very much hated and feared by many people around here.

How important is having a good education in your country? Can someone expect to make it far on a high school education?

Very important. It is very difficult to get a job without a college education.

Everyone with enough money.

Not terrible. Public safety is always a priority.

Gay marriage?
Civil rights?
Immigration?

How do I feel about them, or people in my area?
Abortion: I don't care about it, and think it should be legal. Most people around here are against it.
Gay Marriage: I absolutely think it should be made legal. Many do not agree with me.

My country is a lump of shit. We have an incomptent leader who shouldn't be in power, political correctness has overrun the country and murderors are let out of prison after 5 years. And thats just the start.

What in our future are you most worried about?

Peak oil.

Are you concerned with the resurgence in terrorism?

)

Democratic.

How are women viewed in your society? Are they treated as equally as men?

They are treated equally.

What is expected of children as far as education and behavior?

Way to much IMO. The sheer number of exams piled upon young children leads to a huge amount of stress.

How are homosexuals and lesbians viewed in your society? Are they treated as fairly as traditional married couples?

They are ussually tolerated, except by a few religious wackos. I wouldn't say they were treated as fairly as traditional married couples.

Is school open for everyone? Regardless of race, sex, or religious views?

Yes

Crime is very bad. Where I live it is mostly minor crimes, but in the big cities there is an extreme amount of crime, many of it from teenagers.

What about social issues?
Abortion?
Gay marriage?
Civil rights?
Immigration?

Abortion should be legal for all up until a certain period, and after that only if the womans life is in danger or whatever. Gay marriage should be legal. Civil rights are very important, but are being steadily eroded. And immigration is good provided it is restricted.

What is your view on:
Global Warming?

I think global warming is real and is partly human caused. I think the rising food and gas prices send us a clear message - invest in alternative fuels guys. And I don't know much about Darfur.

Nearly all stuff is imported here. The only time I have ever seen "made in england" was on a ruler.

It's very important. You can't expect to make it very far.

Is school open for everyone? Regardless of race, sex, or religious views?
Yes.

Is healthcare readily available for everyone?
No. It costs.

Do you have socialized medicine?
No.

How bad is crime? Is public safety a big priority?
We get a robbery or a baby murdering now and then. Nothing daily.

What about social issues?
Abortion? I think it's wrong, but some people disagree.
Gay marriage? Couldn't care less.
Civil rights? Very important.
Immigration? We really need to keep the population in check. Make it harder to immigrate.

What is your view on:
Global Warming? A very serious problem. Should be attended to immediately.
Rising food and gas prices? See above.
Darfur? That's their problem.

What influence does foreign trade have on your economy? Are most of your goods made in your country or are they imported?
Nearly everything is imported, but it's been like that for ages. It helps other country's economies.

Give a brief synopsis of your daily activities.
Wake up, go to school, ponder, homework, games, ponder, sleep.

Name one thing that is most important to you in your daily life, if possible, a picture would be nice.
Nothing's really that important.

Give your honest opinion of your country. Do you think your country does a good job of looking after its citizens, addressing social issues (food prices, gas prices, healthcare issues etc), addressing foreign issues, and maintaining good relations with other countries?
I think it says and maybe even plans to do a lot of good for everyone, but on the way down from being an idea to being enforced a lot of things get in the way, though things not necessarily solely to do with my country... things like greed, corruption, laziness ruin a lot of good ideas that could greatly improve life.
What is your view on American foreign policy?
Honestly, I don't know why we can't just be friends with all the countries and settle disputes peacefully. Maybe I'm just thick.
What is your cultural metaphor for the USA? For example. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the United States? Be honest!!
Stephen Colbert
What is your view on the wars in Iraq in Afghanistan?
*groaan*

and that's pretty much it.

Well, we're kind of at a stalemate, what really needs to be done is to have someone peaceful and capable put into power, but that ain't gonna happen.
If you could change one thing about the world today, what would you change?
Make it turn the other way, just to **** with people.
Name one thing in your culture that an outsider may find strange, or amusing.
Halloween?
What in our future are you most worried about?
Some big horrible disaster that will affect me and many others greatly.
Are you concerned with the resurgence in terrorism?
Not really.

Yes
Do you own a car?
No
How much is gas? (per gallon)
In my area, about $4.50
Does your city/country have a good, well-maintained, accessible public transportation system? If so, do you use it?
I hear people complain about it all the time, but it seems fine to me. I use it occasionally, but usually my parents drive me to places.
Do you have a job? If so, what is it? How many hours a week do you work?
No
What is your nations government? (Democratic/Monarch/Dictatorship/Communist etc)
"democratic"
How are women viewed in your society? Are they treated as equally as men?
They're supposed to be, but not all the time.
What is expected of children as far as education and behavior?
From what I've seen, not much. Little bastards.
How are homosexuals and lesbians viewed in your society? Are they treated as fairly as traditional married couples?
Well, obviously viewpoints vary, especially in my area. I live relatively close to San Francisco, which has a reputation of being friendly towards and full of gay people. It seems that most people under the age of thirty (and those over the age of thirty who had close relations to hippies) are totally cool with gays, while those over thirty (and those under thirty who spend most of their time being brainwashed in church) are totally not cool with gays.
How important is having a good education in your country? Can someone expect to make it far on a high school education?
Nowadays you can't do much with only a high school diploma, you need at least a four-year college education to do most good jobs. However, our educational systems are very underfunded and also lax on standards (except on the most rediculous and useless standards), especially when compared to other countries in Europe or Asia (them Koreans, wow)
Is school open for everyone? Regardless of race, sex, or religious views?
Is healthcare readily available for everyone?
School, yes. Healthcare, if you can afford it.
Do you have socialized medicine?
Personally, or the country? I don't think so, either way.
How bad is crime? Is public safety a big priority?
In my particular city, not really. But right nearby are Richmond and Oakland, both of which are notorious for crime and gang-related shit.
What about social issues?
Abortion?
Gay marriage?
Civil rights?
Immigration?
What about them? Lots of young people seem ok with abortion, gay marriage, and most everybody I can imagine support civil rights. As for immigration, there are a lot of mexicans by home depot.
What is your view on:
Global Warming?
Rising food and gas prices?
Darfur?
Global warming- bullshit.
Rising Prices- gonna suck for me once I have to go live for myself.
Darfur- mein kampf? what the hell is darfur.

What influence does foreign trade have on your economy? Are most of your goods made in your country or are they imported?
Most manufactured goods are imported from china. I think most agriculture is local.
Give a brief synopsis of your daily activities
Babysit children, visit friends' houses.
Name one thing that is most important to you in your daily life, if possible, a picture would be nice.
I don't want to sound like a dork, but I think my computer is basically what keeps me from goign crazy from tediousness and constant interaction with small children almost exclusively.

Do you have socialized medicine?

I'm pretty ignorant of most of our foreign policy really so I can't really say... Iraq was obviously a blunder, though

What is your cultural metaphor for the USA? For example. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the United States? Be honest!!
I still have that melting pot metaphor stuck in my head from back in school :p

What is your view on the wars in Iraq in Afghanistan?
I'm just hoping it's over soon... at least to the point where they can't be called "wars"

What is your opinion in Iran and North Korea having nuclear programs?
For power, fine (weapons, no)... let them have it sp they don't have to hide it and do it anyway. That way we can at least keep an eye on them. Again, I don't know how this shit works, though, so I claim ignorance again.

If you could change one thing about the world today, what would you change?
Is this where I say "world peace" and win the pageant? No, I say we need a new big island at least the size of Australia populated with dinosaurs

Name one thing in your culture that an outsider may find strange, or amusing.
Uuuuuh, we're normal here. We don't even have accents.

The really cool inventions not coming about until I'm an old man or dead

Are you concerned with the resurgence in terrorism?
What resurgence? Believe it or not, terrorism existed before 2001

Why not...

What is your name?

Harrison

What is your age?

22

What is your gender?

Male

What city and country do you live in?

London, UK

Do you have any kids/spouse/siblings?

A brother

What is your education level?

A-levels (roughly equivalent to a high school diploma in the USA)

Economic status?

The family survives on welfare, I work a low income job (for now, anyway)

Do you worry about making ends meet?

Constantly

Do you own your own home?

No

Give your honest opinion of your country. Do you think your country does a good job of looking after its citizens, addressing social issues (food prices, gas prices, healthcare issues etc), addressing foreign issues, and maintaining good relations with other countries?

No. This government does seemingly everything in its power to screw the people over at every opportunity, passing hundreds of ridiculous new laws each year, taxing people to destruction and not even delivering decent public services in the process.

What is your view on American foreign policy?

Idiotic - unless it really is some sort of conspiracy to secure oil supplies for the future, then it must actually be fairly intelligent I suppose.

What is your cultural metaphor for the USA? For example. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the United States? Be honest!!

The flag, the national anthem and those cheesy American shows like World's Scariest Police Chases or Dog the Bounty Hunter.

What is your view on the wars in Iraq in Afghanistan?

Pointless - Iraq anyway. Afghanistan was a good thing but it's dragged on for so long now I just don't care anymore.

What is your opinion in Iran and North Korea having nuclear programs?

Anyone who thinks it's a good thing needs their head examined.

If you could change one thing about the world today, what would you change?

Pass. It is what it is.

Name one thing in your culture that an outsider may find strange, or amusing.

The envy, spite and reverse snobbery that's sadly endemic to British culture.

What in our future are you most worried about?

The way that "free" Western countries are becoming increasingly totalitarian in nature. It's becoming more and more the case that to have freedom you have to live in the third world.

Are you concerned with the resurgence in terrorism?

Yes, although mostly home-grown terrorism and the segregation caused by multicultural nonsense.

Who do you feel is the best candidate for the 2008 U.S. election? And why?

They all suck. I really don't get the Obama mania, he brings nothing interesting to the table. He's just a black Tony Blair - all charm and style, no substance.

What are some of your biggest struggles that you face day to day?

Money worries, dealing with my bad leg (can't walk far, one leg is slightly shorter than the other, painful to walk and I have to make do without crutches most of the time as I can't carry them on my bike), surviving my motorcycle commute through the worst traffic this country has to offer

What is your religion? (optional)

None

Do your religious views affect your daily life?

No

Do you own a car?

No - I ride a motorcycle.

How much is gas? (per gallon)

US $9 per gallon

Does your city/country have a good, well-maintained, accessible public transportation system? If so, do you use it?

London has a very extensive public transport system, although it is very unreliable, horribly overcrowded and the most expensive of its kind in the world. I don't use it because a) I prefer to use my bike, b) it's cheaper and quicker to use my bike, c) they wouldn't transport animals in these conditions and d) because it's not even remotely disabled accessible, especially in rush hour and I'm not physically capable of using it to get to work on a daily basis.

Do you have a job? If so, what is it? How many hours a week do you work?

Yes, although I'm not working this week. I do business-to-business telemarketing within the IT industry, 40 hours a week.

What is your nations government? (Democratic/Monarch/Dictatorship/Communist etc
)

Democratic...in theory.

How are women viewed in your society? Are they treated as equally as men?

They receive preferential treatment - men get the raw deal in relationships, divorce settlements, family courts, employment (positive discrimination in the police force for example, or lower physical fitness requirements for military service, it's acceptable for a woman to do a "man's" job, but good luck working in childcare as a male)

What is expected of children as far as education and behavior?

Far too much in terms of education and far too little in terms of behaviour.

How are homosexuals and lesbians viewed in your society? Are they treated as fairly as traditional married couples?

It's generally a non-issue.

How important is having a good education in your country? Can someone expect to make it far on a high school education?

Yes, university is largely irrelevant except for certain highly specialised careers. A total waste of three years and 15k if you ask me.

Is school open for everyone? Regardless of race, sex, or religious views?

Yes.

Is healthcare readily available for everyone?

Yes.

Do you have socialized medicine?

Yes

How bad is crime? Is public safety a big priority?

We have the worst crime rates in the developed world. Unfortunately the justice system in this country is completely ****ed, the police spend their time persecuting law-abiding citizens for minor infractions and the courts hand down draconian punishments for the same. Yet the real criminals have little to fear, from either the police or the courts.

What about social issues?
Abortion?
Gay marriage?
Civil rights?
Immigration?

Our abortion laws are fine as they are - up to 20 weeks or so.

Don't really care one way or another about gay marriage, although if you realise that the whole purpose of marriage is to provide a framework for a family - it's not about the couple, it's about the kids - it kind of makes a mockery of the whole concept of marriage.

Civil rights - everyone should be free to do as they wish unless it infringes upon the rights of another to do the same.

Immigration - when it contributes to the economic prosperity and social cohesion of the nation, then fine. Otherwise, no. At the moment it seems to be easier to immigrate to the UK if you're a radical Muslim with anti-Western views and a family of seven living off benefits than as an American who would contribute positively to the economy and to the community in which they live.
Also, this country is massively overpopulated beyond sustainable levels.

What is your view on:
Global Warming?
Rising food and gas prices?
Darfur?

Global warming is a convinient excuse for socialists to take a swipe at commerce and industry, for envious turds with a complex to hate people with money and nice cars, and for governments to tax the living shit out of the productive classes.

The prices of food and fuel at the moment are obscene and getting worse on a weekly basis, largely due to hyperinflation caused by excessive taxes on fuel in the name of "green".

Darfur is a tragedy, obviously.

What influence does foreign trade have on your economy? Are most of your goods made in your country or are they imported?

China...

Give a brief synopsis of your daily activities

It really depends on the day. On a weekday I get up at 6:45 to leave for work at 7:45, so that I arrive in good time for a 9am start. Leave at 5, get home at 6ish. I'll either spend the evening relaxing in front of the TV or PC, at the pub with a friend/friends or if the weather's nice and I'm not too tired I might spend some time out on the bike. Usually read in bed at night (sci-fi).
Friday nights are usually spent with friends on the bikes, unless it's sub-zero temperatures or chucking it down with rain. On the weekend I either go out on the bike all day, by myself or with friends, chill out at home or visit my best friend in Exeter.

Name one thing that is most important to you in your daily life, if possible, a picture would be nice.

Motorcycling. My life revolves around it.

Nein.

'Do you have socialized medicine?'
What a stupid term.

*proceeds to datamine the hell out of everybody who has already posted*

I supsect I will be answering this questionaire pretty soon anyway.

What is your name?

What is your age?

24

What is your gender?

Male.

What city and country do you live in?

Edinburgh, Scotland.

Do you have any kids/spouse/siblings?

No, girlfriend, no.

What is your education level?

Highers (A Levels), NC, Merit level HNC (incomplete)

Economic status?

Working class

Do you worry about making ends meet?

Yes. Cost of living is always increasing whilst requirements to be insured for everything you own or owe takes strain on monthly funds.

Do you own your own home?

No. House prices are too expensive and some mortgages are too much to pay back.

Give your honest opinion of your country. Do you think your country does a good job of looking after its citizens, addressing social issues (food prices, gas prices, healthcare issues etc), addressing foreign issues, and maintaining good relations with other countries?

At the present time, no. Citizens who work for their living along with raising families are under constant pressure from taxation and price hiking. Food prices are reasonable if you can budget, petrol prices have taken a sickening rise since recent industrial action and just recently it has been revealed energy prices will up by 40% over the next few years. Foreign issues seemed to be based on the current US political climate.

What is your view on American foreign policy?

Poor. It has been wasteful and costly with regards to the wars in the middle east and all at the expense of the American taxpayer.

What is your cultural metaphor for the USA? For example. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the United States? Be honest!!

Food portions and prices. The portions are plentiful and the prices are incredibly low.

What is your view on the wars in Iraq in Afghanistan?

Needless. These conflicts will likely cause the US economy to implode, whilst the US political system will continue to be bogged down by religiously driven voters and candidates.

What is your opinion in Iran and North Korea having nuclear programs?

Unsure. If it was strictly for the research of providing alternative energy for the population with a responsible and regulated approach to handling waste, then fair enough. I hate the thought of any nation on Earth possesing nuclear weapons.

If you could change one thing about the world today, what would you change?

Ehhhhhhh, I would probably change the weather in Scotland from shitty cold and rain to lovely sunshine. :p

Name one thing in your culture that an outsider may find strange, or amusing.

Alcohol. Our national pastime of binge drinking would leave some begging belief.

What in our future are you most worried about?

Security. As a species entirely reliant on machinery and energy and fossil fuel, it would only take one to cease before we knew how to continue to survive.

Are you concerned with the resurgence in terrorism?

Yes, but only by how terrorism is coming to light in the UK with British citizens being brainwashed by radical thinking.

Who do you feel is the best candidate for the 2008 U.S. election? And why?

None of them, mainly because I don't think there's any canditate at this time or the next to tackle the countries deep rooted problems.

What are some of your biggest struggles that you face day to day?

That what I'm doing with myself at this moment in time isn't what I want, and the realisation that any move I make to attain what I would truly want will set me back severely socially and financially.

What is your religion? (optional)

Jedi. Oops, none. :p

Do your religious views affect your daily life?

N/A

Do you own a car?

Yes.

How much is gas? (per gallon)

It's about ?1.20p a litre. I'm not what the conversion is on a gallon.

Does your city/country have a good, well-maintained, accessible public transportation system? If so, do you use it?

Yes it actually does. There are frequent buses and trains. The trains are sometimes questionable in terms of service but all of the localised travel is fine. I use it when I must but most of the time I drive.

Do you have a job? If so, what is it? How many hours a week do you work?

Yes. A civil engineer. about 40 hours a week.

What is your nations government? (Democratic/Monarch/Dictatorship/Communist etc
)

Although there is a monarchy in place, it would best be described as democratic.

How are women viewed in your society? Are they treated as equally as men?

Women for the most part have equal opportunities but certain recruitment policies such as emergency services give preferential selection for female candidates.

What is expected of children as far as education and behavior?

Children are expected to finish school up until their final year and apply for a placement at a university. Due to harsher laws on parents for a childs upbringing, behaviour is a big problem. Children are not expected to behave automatically, the parents are assumed to be able to make their child behave.

How are homosexuals and lesbians viewed in your society? Are they treated as fairly as traditional married couples?

Yes. Civil partnerships allow gay couples the same rights as any married man and woman. Homosexuality has no bearing on employment status.

How important is having a good education in your country? Can someone expect to make it far on a high school education?

Fairly important, but equally unnecessary. High profile educations such as degrees, masters, doctrates are all important for a specific career path which can let people be rewarded in work and finance. On the flipside, minimal standard grades (o Level) can lead to modern apprenticeships which can open into self employement and homemade businesses.

Is school open for everyone? Regardless of race, sex, or religious views?

Yes.

Is healthcare readily available for everyone?

Yes.

Do you have socialized medicine?

Yes.

How bad is crime? Is public safety a big priority?

Crime is at a bad level. Public safety is not as great as it once was with a dwindling police force and increased knife and gun crime.

What about social issues?
Abortion?
Gay marriage?
Civil rights?
Immigration?

Abortion laws are good for those who need to consider it.

Gay marriage is lawful although it is probably more fitting to call it civil partnership in the strictest meaning of the word.

Civil rights are reasonable.

Immigration is fine for people willing to take jobs and contribute lawfully to society. Many immigrants come here and do jobs no native Britain would ever want to do in the first place.

What is your view on:
Global Warming?
Rising food and gas prices?
Darfur?

Global warming, be it a man made problem or a problem that we can't percieve as a natural cycle for the planet should at least encourage us to do our part by recycling whatever we can and using less energy. It shouldn't be used as an excuse for the government to tax the population on using plastic bags and their own vehicles.

Food prices are excessive for people with more than one mouth to feed. However, with some effort a budgeted diet can be effective and healthy with a little cooking knowledge, rather than reliance on convenience products. Petrol prices have been hiked by an obscene amount due to industrial action at refineries. Suppliers have recently taken a sickening advantage of this and the government have done nothing about it. This recent hysteria is threatening a lot of businesses across the country.

Saddening.

What influence does foreign trade have on your economy? Are most of your goods made in your country or are they imported?

Foreign trade is what gives us access to the majority of products on the shelves. It's made overseas for next to nothing in poor conditions and then sold at maximum price. This means that money continues to circulate whilst lining the pockets of the already wealthy.

Give a brief synopsis of your daily activities

Weekdays consist of waking at either 6 am or 8:30 am and arriving at work early or late. Work until 4:30 ish or 6:30 ish to go home and either wash clothes, cook dinner, go to the pub with mates or play the odd videogame. Weekends consist of sleeping late, keeping up to date with any football, drinking at night and looking for a partner or someone to have sex with.
