After reading sHm0zY's impressions with HL2, I got really excited. Especially after hearing that a Combine soldier nocked a soda can off a table and told him to "Pick it up!" This got me thinking.
How many games have actually made you REALLY want to kill the enimies, excluding when they are trying to kill you.
I mean why are you killing the demons in Doom 3? Because they are from Hell, and that is... bad. Or simply because they want to kill you. Even tho I enjoyed playing Doom 3, I never really got to an emotional level when it came to killing the baddies. It was just like "Shit, an Imp, kill it so it will leave me alone!" Most of the enimies I wanted to kill because they were anoying (Lost Souls, I'm talking to you).
This is why I hope HL2 will do a good job of actually hating the enimies, before you have to go and kill them. So you're like, "Man, I can't wait until I get a gun so I can blow these freakin Combine head's off!" So things like making you pick things up, beating you when you're defensless, and pushing you back make me believe that by the time I get a chance, I will be more than happy to off those Combine guys. Or run them over... ;)

Post how you think HL2 will really make you want to kill the enimies, as aposed to just shooting them because they shot you first.

i wanted to kill the G man in oposing force. he was a big asshole there and i would take shots at him everytime i saw him

Well I remember most of the enemies in HL1 making me think "Oh noes! :O" and generally just disliking and being apprehensive about meeting the next set of foes :D

It seems like we'll be wanting to kick Breen's ass throughout most of the game. He seems like he would really irritate me spouting out all that propaganda. I hate when people do that (irl of course, in a game I love when they do that because I can kill them).

ermm, in deus ex 2 i just ran around and killed all the civilians because they were ugly. seriously, pibborando i think ur getting too emotionaly involved

Max Payne 2, Vlad was the biggest **** ******* **** this side of mars, and after the attrociously uncomfortable boss battle, it was the most satisfying death id ever seen.

As for half-life 1, the Garg, tentacle, big momma, and assasins got on my tits.

I'm really going to enjoy stuff like that (blowing Combine heads off, shooting Combine off ledges, smashing them with giant crane, etc....)
The combine are like Nazis. This is what made World War II games so cool. Because you hate them.

Great analogy. Never thought about it that way.

It's ok HL2, you will always have me... even if some people don't apreciate you like I do. I'll never let go...

In half-life I didn't really hate any enemy except maybe the soldiers. they killed innocent scientists and I really felt for the scientists.

Max Payne 2. Vlad. Nuff said.

I hope they manage to get people to dislike the combine soldiers because now I just think they look pretty cool and it'd be fun to battle alongside with them, sorta like what I thought for the Covenant forces in Halo.. I didn't like The Flood since it was pretty much brainless and killed my best buddies in the game, hehe.

I think i'll end up shooting barney and alyx in the head every chance i get.. i dont work well in teams. (Hence why i never play cs)

That's two people that have said Vlad from MP2, but I never felt that way.

I still viewed Vlad as the cool russian dude who helped me from the first game. I liked him. When it came to the final battle with him, I actually regretted playing any further because I didn't want to kill the guy. I left the game with a bittersweet taste in my mouth.

Horne, from the first game, was a much more worthy enemy. She was evil, corporate, ice-cold bitch that killed your family, drugged you up, and threw your life into Hell. Killing her was one of the most satisfying things I've ever done.

Who else? Hmmm... Starkweather from Manhunt. The guy entertained me with his crazed murder-babble, but I still harbored a great dislike for the bastard, especially later in the game after he puts you through some serious bad crap.

I know what you mean. In planetside, I hated the Terran Republic and New Conglomerate empires. Why? Because the Terran Republic were oppressive bastards. Plus the guns they could use were annoying as f*ck. I hate the New Conglomerate even worse. Rebel scum, should all die. We offered them a treaty against the TR and they turned it down because of our technology. Bastards and their newbhammers.

Technology equals might!

I wanted to kill the Gman when he stopped me from going on the helicoptor with fellow soldiers.... the only real time I got REALLY PISSED off at a virtual character. :O

Damn. I still wanted to play threw the rest of OpFor. Thanks.

The only enemy that annoys me to hell is the headcrab.

But the enemy that I really like to kill are the soldiers from HL1 and from the looks of it, the combine in HL2

Same, except im New Conglomerate and I hate the TR for the same reason as you. And I hate you vanu for all those energy weapons, I see the blast go past me but I still get damaged

Up With Newbhammers!

Freedom Over Oppression!

them bleeding ninja beatches.

they royally pissed me off in hl1, and as soon as i saw the concept art for them for HL2 i thought "ahhhhhhhh great"

In reponce to the Max Payne 2 refrences

Vlad was an a-hole thats obvious(sorry for the spoiler).
But what we're forgetting is that we only hate him because the story drives us into hating him.

The difference here is that:

Our enemies in Half-Life 2, will be sitting there, they will be killed over and over. Vlad was a main character, the story lead up to his betrayal and leaving us to hate him. With Half-Life 2, character actions as well as abuse, physical and verbal from these "NPC's" is a totally different way of hating your enemies. These actions were scripted but never part of the story and never required to keep it going. So in short:

Vlad: required portion of the story, which is needed to run and eventually end it.(You hate him because the story tells you to)
Combine: scripted, but not part of the story(You hate them because you choose to)

heh I guess i have to stand up for my guys now... Umm, I think the TR motto should be changed too "Oppression isn't so bad, is it?" By the way You can't really HATE the other sides in that game because the only storyline in the whole damn game is summed up in 5 paragraphs when you first pick a side. I picked the TR because of the red and black colors :p

Slightly off-topic, but it's been bugging the hell out of me.

ENEMIES

Wasn't that chopper blown to bits, it's ages since i played it but i'm sure it gets downed.

ever since i first saw images of the combine, before knowing what little we know about them, ive disliked them. in a very cool and interested way. scenes like this: http://www.3dgamers.com/screenshots/games/halflife2/22.html really appeal to me. i think after seeing stuff like this going on, i will genuinely enjoy shooting them. they really feel like the badguys, not just a.i. that attacks you.

Seriously...a game winds you up so much you are willing to kill?

*RoguePsi thinks up a brainwashing plot to take over the world

the pirana fish thingy in hl!!!

man that fish scared the hell out of me!

i remember the cage hanging above the pool of water then SPLASH! i was swimming SOOO FAST! heart going crazy! lol

I thought that the fact you were fighting alongside other marines in halo against the covenant was brilliant in the sense that it made you a part of a group of no hopers you wanted to do as much as possible to save. Was one of a few games where i disliked the enemies on a higher level than just because they're shooting at me.

Yeah, from the videos I've seen, that feeling is coming pretty fast. When Dr. Breen says "It's safer here" you want to say. "Wait and see, old man, wait and see."

Oh yeah, one other guy I wanted to kill was Dr. Bertruger (sp?) from Doom 3. I wanted to kill that creepy bastard soooo bad. The worst thing is, we never got to!

The two guys you see in the last scene of Mafia.

I won't spoil it, but I really really wanted to kill them :)

i wanted to kill professors when they said "this is as far as i go" or something like that

You know computer AI is getting advanced when we can say with conviction that the AI was acting like an asshole!

What kind of enemy would be an enemy that you don't want to kill?!
