I love songs which have sort of an epic feel to them. usually a very spacey sounding or progressive bunch of tunes with keyboard etc.

SEE THIS YOUTUBE VID for the kind of songs I mean..WATCH THE WHOLE THING.

You may want to check out some Pelican, particually the Australasia and City of Echoes albums for some truely 'epic' and ear deafening tunes. It's all instrumental, though, but I've a feeling you might enjoy Aereogramme's My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go On album as that has some proper drawn out 'spacey' tracks with some string/orchestra sections here and there.

I see there was Deftones in that compilation, something from the new album I think it was. The older stuff is much, much different to the more progressive sound they've taken to recently - they use to be a really balls-out and pretty raw band but they've toned it down abit recently. Saturday Night Wrist (the album that track is from) is quite good.

Knights of Cydonia by Muse is truely epic rock.

thx. What i'm looking for is that "soundtrack" "epic" kind of a feel to these songs. like.. which means an absolutely necessary keyboard sound (or ochestra) and powerful vocals. for example, a singer can choose to end of his tune from a normal to low one, but diliberately ends it off with a higher pitch "spacey" "epic" tune instead (f.e. hoobastank) or (Porcupine tree)..why even (Symphony x).. or (filter - freaking awesome music)

its like BOC or Air + Heavy/Normal/Prog Rock.. know what I mean?

Thanks will check them out, want more though

Get the album Terria by Devin Townsend. It doesn't get any more epic than that. Incredibly amazing album as well.

Falkenbach has a ton of epic music, but this is just one of their songs and a personal favorite of mine.

Wanted to post Ghost Love Score, but yes, it's epic.

You'll definitely want some Porcupine Tree too, specifically:
- Arriving Somewhere
- Open Car
- Mellotron Scratch

Also epic because metal with an orchestra can't possibly fail: Metalllica - No Leaf Clover

Octavarium or SDOIT - Score album

Abso-****ing-epic.

Already been a thread in the past on this.

But...

In Limbo - Radiohead
When I End And You Begin - Radiohead
Paranoid Android - Radiohead
Citizen Erased - Muse
Buterflies and Hurricanes - Muse
Knights of Cydonia - Muse

to name a few..

Pimpin' Oceansize for the billionth time. This is one of their best songs, Music For a Nurse (ignore the images, they're distracting from the song):

It was on some Orange advert a while back, so you might have heard it then. They have a new album coming out in October, give it a listen if you can. :)

[edit]: a loud one!

Look to any Bowie song.

I think we need a Bowie thread.

I love Bowie.

:(

Metalllica - No Leaf Clover
Octavarium or SDOIT - Score album
Third Eye.
Citizen Erased - Muse
Buterflies and Hurricanes - Muse
We're In This Together by NIN
Seconded on those.

A Perfect Circle - The Package
A Perfect Circle - The Noose
Mogwai - We're No Here
Soundgarden - Like Suicide (pretty mellow until about half-way in... at which point you can just picture a stadium of people going nuts :p)
Tool - Wings For Marie/10,000 Days

Oh, and get Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds if you haven't already. That just has epic written all over it.

Also, some pretty epic Deftones -

woah epic indeed. i still cannot get over the filter song though..

Wings for Marie/10,000 Days is epic as hell, especially live.

The entire trio of songs on Lateralus (Lateralus, Disposition, Reflection) that were originally one 20 minute track make for a pretty epic c-c-c-combo as well.

Tool does epic well.

I don't understand how most of the songs in this thread qualify as "epic". Usually an epic song, to me, is lengthy, and has recurring musical themes and flourishes that gradually build up to a climax that displays the central vision of the song in full force that is far more intelligent and complex in construction than typical songwriting. The layering of various instruments, sounds, etc. is also generally a must, as the atmosphere created is of the utmost importance; there must be a sense of energy, grandeur, and importance that is absent from other songs. A storytelling aspect, which does not have to be through lyrics, but can be communicated through music, must shine through. Most of the songs posted here lack nearly all of those, and just sound like generic rock/etc. numbers that I'd expect to hear on the radio any time I flick it on.

Yes, exactly. This perfectly describes Terria by Devin Townsend. :D

soulslicer, I've always loved that Filter song as well.

Fixed, silly pants.

Devin Townsend has some really good songs that have that epic feeling to them, but It's not really for everyone. One band that I've come across recent years that nobody knows about is Sybreed, their production quality is top notch and every song has an epic feeling to it. I really recommend them If you're into progressive metal / industrial metal, they have some new songs from their new album on www.myspace.com/sybreed. :D

The most epic song ever made...
Promentory

It really kicks in right at the very end... look it up :)

Hm, I think I define the word 'epic' a little different. It's not a synonym for 'great'/'outstanding' for me. I'd call tunes such as the Pirates of the Carribean theme epic. I agree with No Leaf Clover being epic. Perhaps the 'Requiem for a Dream' song as well.

The song from this thread is epic http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=126465 shame I still don't know the name of it ;/

Its not sodding brain surgery. An epic song is simply a song that would leave you with a, '......wow' feeling, the feeling that what you just heard is one of the best songs you have ever heard.

my meaning of epic was really referring to rock music. one with lots of keyboard, symphony and probably lots of guitars (heavy, electric, base everything..) and it must produce that "build-up" kind of sound.. like ta...daaa!!!!!!...(ok I cant seem to explain it using text..)

E.S. Posthumus ftw

I think that your usage of "epic" is far too colloquial and strays much too far outside the bounds of the traditional usage of the word to be used in the context of art, music, film, literature, etc.. Under your definition, you could call something as inane as System Of A Down "epic" so long as it left you thinking "wow".

No its more than just a wow feeling, like I said, you listen to song, and at the end of it you are certain that it was one of the best songs you have ever heard. That in my book, is classed as an epic song, in opinion anyway.

Just as some non-metal examples (I'm less familiar with other genres of music): something like "Stairway To Heaven" by Led Zeppelin, though cliched, is a decent example of a rock epic. There are several Pink Floyd songs that also fit the bill, and many Tool songs are also fairly good examples.

Exactly what I was going to say.

Pure epicness :D

Another amazingly epic album is Back To Times of Splendor, by Disillusion. I know Sea will like this band.

"Tetra-Sync" by Squarepusher

Do it. And I think it qualifies as epic by both definitions being debated about here.

Justice - Phantom (parts 1 & 2)

Glitchy electro house, builds up over two songs :)
