Episode 1: my thoughts

hl2 is a piece of cake for most of the time
Not true. That depends on how "hardcore" a gamer you are, and sadly most peeps are casual gamers.

PS: The members of this forum don't reflect the majority of gamers.

HL2 is not your casual mindless blood squirting video game. It forces you to think, understand, and use your brain.
Where?! When?! Use your brain?! use your brain maybe but give the rest of us some credit! HL2 is a cakewalk that requires about as much grey matter as Space Invaders!

He meant the story.

He meant the story.
What do you mean. 'he meant the story'?! The story forces you to use your brain? How's that?! Anyway, I was talking about combat/gameplay (it's mainly what I've been talking about since I originally posted) & arguing how it's the fundemental element of all first person shooters (hence the name - First person shooter!). Clearly HL2 does go beyond that with a much more substantial storyline, characters etc. But as sure are eggs are eggs HL2 is an FPS & it's poor combat/gameplay for me can't be masked by breathtaking physics, a very cool storyline & character development. For me I don't see why you can't have all that as well as engaging & challenging combat. HL2's combat is niether of those things because it's so easy. Infact sometimes when I was playing through the game the combat almost felt like an inconvenience rather than an engaging challenge! Why? Because I rarely felt like I was challenged!

Even if the combat isn't the most challanging I sure has hell found it very fun.

What I know is most of the FPS games use good combat scenes to mask their poor physics, characters and storyline.

I found that Alyx is amusing.

What I know is that FPS's are 3D combat games first & foremost. Sure the physics in HL2 is easily the best demonstrated in a game, the characters have been well thought out & acted & the storyline is top draw. But ....... you don't really need any of those things (though physics is fun & adds to the realism) to make a good FPS. It helps & it's good to have but you have to get the fundamentals sorted first.

Valve seem to have moved the FPS genre sideways not forwards if you ask me. They have developed the areas that are more akin to role playing games. Being that Gabe Newell is such a huge fan of World of Warcraft I wonder if that's not a coincidence? Anyway my point remains the same - the most critical area of an FPS is the combat system. Get that wrong & your in the wrong ball park (as they say across the pond)! It's the fundemental element of the genre & incidentaly why you spend most of your time in HL2 shooting things! Or did people not notice with all the physics, character interaction (!!!) & storyline going on around them (as Gordon loads another clip into his weapon of choice!).

OH SHIT, GABE NEWELL LIKES WORLD OF WARCRAFT, THEREFORE WE CAN CONCLUDE THAT GABE IS TRYING TO TURN FPS GAMES INTO RPG'S

In other news, I thought the combat in HL2 was fun.

I was thinking out loud with that one admittedly ......... although saying that some of the elements HL2 is big on is a definite nod towards the RPG genre. People are talking about character interaction (although there isn't any going on on the part of our character, Gordon Freeman) & storyline. Is that not something more akin to the RPG genre? Gabe Newell IS trying to turn the HL universe into an RPG one!! Watch out for Half Life universe! coming soon to a PC near you :rolling:

Play Doom I, and enjoy it.

RPG is the most shitty kind of gameplay, especially the online one. However, kids keep loving it. That's why the world is so ****ed up.

Half-Life as an RPG!!!

Thats like turning Pro Evo 5 into an FPS!

As long as they don't do to half-life what Blizzard did to Warcraft and blend it into RPG then make a MMO Sequel after it. :D

I sincerely hope there will be Warcraft IV siince Warcraft series is the best game ever. And WoW is so meaningless that I have never think of buying it. No online game, please.

Yeah i have recently deleted my wow account and got rid of it, it was like really looking like something good at first but my god is it boring! Probably one of the most boring and tedious games ever, i must trade it in immediately!!!

Gabe isn't just going to wake up in the morning and go, "OMG WoW PWNS. Kay, so, Mr. Designer, make HL2 an RPG."

He runs a business, he's not going to change the way games are built on a personal whim.

yup, and whoever even thinks of making half-life into an rpg should be wearing a dunce hate permanately!

And then say "and we're gonna make a full live-action movie about it". I am not gonna let this go.:P

This Half-Life RPG fearmongering is sheer bullshit. WarCraft could afford adopting RPG elements because of the nature of its content. Half-Life? Not so much. If it ever, on the smallest chance, decided to take a direction into MMO territory, it would be nothing like WoW.
