episode 1 won't launch

i've tried reinstalling etc, ep1 simply will not launch. The preparing to launch window opens, it says download paused next to ep1 in the steam games window, and then the box dissapears, and nothing happens....
i need help!

my specs arent important because i had it playing about 3 days ago...it played fine. One day i restarted the computer and now it wont run

ok 1.6ghz radeon 9800pro 786mb ram

i think this might be important though, when i restarted the computer came up with a diagnostic message saying at least vertex shader 1.1 and something else 1.1 are required to run. anyone know what could have caused this?

With that Spec, you will have HL2 and E1 run in lowest setting, that's if they ever run. specially EP1.
