kinda got confused on were to post this :p

anyways the question is do you want valve to make more episodes after ep3 or a full game, im in between, a full game is nice but it would take a long time to make

6 year gap in between half life 1 and 2

so what do you guys think?

Offtopic - (couldn't be stuffed making a new thread about it) I think it would be cool if they had a video on the making of half life, like bungie did to halo before they ****ed it up.

Full game, as long as I don't have to wait 6 ****ing years.

After the Episodes? A full game.

Episodes. The reason is because games of today and tomorrow are becoming more and more complex in both technology and screenplay as well as the overall sheer scope of all these factors combined. It is becoming increasingly difficult for developers and producers to keep up with demand when such a substantial amount of content is being crammed into the best games of today. It will come a day when episodic content becomes the mainstay of next-gen games due to time and practicality. Not to mention profitability from the producers viewpoint. Would you rather wait 5-6 years in between sequels for full games that are great, or would you rather have episodic content wich equates to more frequent games that are great? Might as well get used to it starting with Valve's Half-Life series imo. :D

"Films". Slightly-longer-than-episodic games with self-contained plots, similar to Portal.

yeah if they have full games by the time its released we would be to old to play :p

HL3 after Ep. 3, without a doubt. I don't care how long we have to wait, Valve will take as long as they need to to make it just as much of an epic step forward as the last 2 games.

Portal, on the other hand, needs some episodes. Could stand to be about as long as Portal itself, though.

I agree to an extent, but I feel that there is more that should be done with Portal than simply continuing the story. The gameplay and puzzles were always core to the game, and the story was the icing on the cake. It would be a shame to merely continue the story at the cost of the fun. In this case, expansion packs or multiplayer may be a better alternative to episodes as we know them.

Agreed. I'm sure they can pull something out of their hat to take it to the next level of mind-bendingness.

I'm in between. I'd prefer a full game but a 6 year wait? o_O

Both. I've been Gordan enough for now. I could stand to wait to have his story continued.

The most successful "episode" by far has been Portal, so I'd like to see them using small more frequent releases to expand the Half-life universe (and maybe dabble with new IP) rather than continuing Gordan's story. This would better take advantage of the way Valve associate each episode with tech and gameplay updates. Instead of forcing a new engine capability into Gordan's story (which works for things like coop AI and graphical updates), they can make a game more centered around the new features (like Portal).

For Valve, I want episodes. For any other dev I want full games. 2 years is a long ass time to wait for a game, and if valve made a full game, it would go way beyond.

Three episodes and one more final game to finish the Half-Life story.

What about that extra 4th episode not made by valve? Actually what ever happened to that?

I voted for a full game.I enjoy a good full game more then I
enjoy a good episode. If I had played episode 1 and 2 one after
the other instead of 2 years apart I would have enjoyed them
more. And if I had to chose between episodic content like Ep1 1
game for 20,- and a full game I would chose a full game.

That said I would rather have three smaller games for 50,- then
one full game. This way the dev can sell 2 sequels which will
ensure sales, while adding a original game which would probably
not have sold well on it's own.

Not only that, I agree with Samon that It's hard to maintain a
consistently good gameplay for a full game. Most core concepts
and worlds which define what can be done in a particular game are
hard to stretch for a full game length. While if you include
three separate games you can start over in every game, you're
ideas are not confined within one universe. And thus in my
opinion three smaller games can provide a higher quality overall
experience then one full length game.

I'm liking the episodes. If done right, at the speed they say they will be done, would be awesome. Not dissing Valve, as their quality is second to none, but with episodes every 6 months - 1 yr, would make for you to play just enough to enjoy and not get bored, and wait just long enough to keep you on the "hype" of the last episode.

In between:

Sam and Max is doing right, timely releases and valued prices.

Valve on the other hand, and I hate speaking ill of them, are pushing the idea to its limits. Their scheduled episodes are year(s) apart, and the value derived is more from bundling (Orange Box) than the scope.

I'm in between.

I'd kind of like a setup where full games are released with episodes in between. A solid, epic breakthrough title followed by expansions allowing more creative expansion with existing content. Valve has often referred to the episodes as "HL2 done better", after all.

I like both.

Episodes are nice because we get new stuff more frequently + they can use newer technology for each release keeping it up-to-date but I think it's about time we got a full game, even if it means waiting much longer.

Nothing wrong with both. Episodes can fill in the gaps between games nicely...assuming that the next full game is also in developement.

In the case of Half-Life, I doubt we'll be waiting another 5-6 years between HL2 Ep3 and HL3. Valve is more forward looking than that and I'm sure developement on HL3 is well on it's way already.

I prefer full-games for a couple of reasons.

Btw, I think episodes is just another word for an expansion pack. Both are dirty words in my opinion.

1) Episodes are a cheesy way for the developer/publisher to make money and rip off the consumer. 2 (or more) episodes = 1 game yet cost more than one game
2) Tougher to sell your significant other that you want to buy a video game if she thinks you just bought a video game (regardless of length of game you purchased)
3) Quality on episodes can be spottier because everybody expects something better in the not too distant future. Or they feature same game play, same art, but add in one new enemy and one new weapon type.
4) I personally find it tougher to become immersed in expansion packs. It usually takes me 10+ hours to really "buy-in" to a game experience. Most episodes/expansions are usually over by then.

Though on a positive note, I love portal. Though I don't necessarily see how portal can be made into episodes consider how it ended.

Well color me surprised! It's blahblahblah. Welcome back.

Wow, quick response acknowledging my existence. :p I never really left, I just visit only once a month or so anonymously. I just felt like posting today.

im in between

the episodes were good so we don't have to wait a decade again, but they could've been a tiny bit longer (especially EP.1)

We haven't even seen actual Episodic content. The HL2 "Episodes" are just dense, smaller packages with well woven gameplay; proving arguably to be better than HL2, which I considered "too long". But it's not Episodic.

I'm not really bothered though. Full game/Episode - whatever.

HL2 was too long, I found that there were too many places, I mean-
-Metropolis
-Beach
-Town
-Industrial Area
-and between HL1 and the Episodes, theres not many places to go without it being repetitive.

hopefully EP.3 will be a medium length and the arctic won't bee to dull/get old fast.(especially once you beat Lost Planet)

I want a full game for sure, even if I have to wait ten years I will wait!

full game, especially if were talking about open ended sandbox games, episodic content for that would just be ew and I hope it never comes to that.

Between Episodes and Full Games.

I don't mind waiting, as long as there's a decent chunk of content to play through.

It also fits my lifestyle better. I can manage things easier if they are in smaller chunks than huge 20 hour long epic pieces.

I have to agree I thought HL2 was too long, but that's pretty much the only criticism I can give it.
