Well... yeah a bit late. I know. But a match like this deserves a topic nontheless to discuss the results of it.

Without doubt the greatest match of the tournament so far, some (international) media even describe it as a true classic, well from a neutral standpoint. But from a Dutch standpoint, it was one huge frustration, leading with 2-0 and playing brilliant football for the first half, and still lose by 2-3 in the end.

We were in the lead for a long time into the second period with 2-1 (the Czech goal was an absolute blunder of our defense), when our coach decided to make a shitty substitution and play defensive. Our biggest mistake, we've shoulda kept Robben in and maintain our agressive play. After that, the 2-2 was quickly made, and finally the 2-3.

The crappy referee didn't help at all either, we were denied at least one penalty and got red for absolutely nothing. I'm not paranoid enough yet to call him completely biased but it often seemed like that. Any referee could have seen that Ruud van Nistelrooy got grabbed in the Czech penalty area, he practically got hugged! Furthermore we got red from an obvious schwalbe.

But all in all, the Czech's deserved to win, they played great, but luck was certainly on their side.

For us, this basically means we're out of the tournament. Our only chance is that we win from Latvia (which we will if we play like we did yesterday apart from the mistakes) and that the Czech's beat Germany or at least draw. Which they can certainly do, but they're qualified anyway, so I don't see them putting much effort on beating the Krauts. They're also putting in their B players to save strength for the quarter finals. I don't have much hope for Holland right now.
Too bad, but we should have beaten Germany in the first place, stupid draw....

Your (more objective) views? :)

Buh.... this feels like a big fecking hangover

from a neutral standpoint, i loved that game :)

it had everything you could want from a game of football. i dunno about being one of the best games ever, but it comes close.

it leaves the group wide open like you said, so it'll be very interesting to watch how things turn out.

i didn't have a problem with many of the refereeing decisions. that penalty appeal for nistlerooy was a bit over the top in my opinion, i wouldn't have given it, but i suppose some refs would.

now you understand how england fans felt the morning after the night before ;)

edit: slightly off topic but.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/e/everton/3822981.stm

how in fecks name is rooney worth over £50m?!?!! all he's done is score 2 freaking goals! madness. he's not even worth £20m in my book.

When are we going to hear from FIFA and EUFA about the disgraceful practice defenders use waiting for corners, free kicks, throw ins or even open play when they have no intention of playing or making an effort to play the ball.Worns is a prime example in the Holland v Germany game. When RVN made his move to the front post when he scored the goal, Worns put a headlock on Ruud and leaned on him forcing him to the ground.Had he not scored it was a 100% penalty in my eyes but would it have been given. He was at it again in the Latvia game. Do any of you have an opinion on this,is it acceptable in the modern game, they use skill, guile, speed to beat opposing players only to be pulled back by ther shirts, wrestled to the ground, spat at, kicked (" I was going for the ball Ref" my ****ing arse, oldest excuse in the world)

About the game last night, that was referee was f*cking ridiculous!

Very good game, the best so far, but wait till Tuesday...

He isnt worth £50m, Everton just slapped that price tag on him so that no-one attempts to buy him. Personally, I dont blame them for trying desperately to hold onto what could very well become one of the greatest footballers of all time. The fact that he is still only 18 also comes into play. How many other footballers can you think of that play as good as he does at that age.

Also, the rule that allowed Ruud Van Nistlerooy to score Holland's second goal should be scrapped completely. That rule just doesnt make sense.

I'll just drag up an old topic here, hope you don't mind.

Wow, it's quite a miracle, Holland reached the quarterfinals despite everything. Germany is out of the tournament.

All thanks to the very sportive Czechs who, despite already being in the quarters, tried their best to still play good football and they beat Germany 2-1!

I can see the Czechs coming very far into the tournament.

too baad for germany, they were very unlucky to lose that last game, 4 or 5 of those chances should have been converted. but, they were a mediocre side at best. it'll be interesting to see what holland and the czechs doo, being teams with rather weak defenses (imo). though i think the czechs are in better shape.

woohoo!! I had already written the Dutch off, but we made it to the quarterfinals anyway. Heinz and Baros, I love you guys! (in a non-sexual way, of course :cheese: )

Thank you Czech Republic (Baros)

And woohoo, Holland beat Latvia 3-0 :naughty:
