With Episode 1's release just 6 hours away, the hype is already starting to seep in. But what if Valves episodic formula fails to deliver? What if the 5-hour experience isn't as refined as we originally thought?[br]Well, lets face it; we all knew that wasn't going to happen. Eurogamer.net have gotten their review online, and have given Episode 1 a whopping 9/10.
Just like the original Half-Life 2, Episode One keeps the player entertained almost the entire time by being inventive, surprising and getting the basics absolutely right. It's a wonderful advert for the excitement that true episodic content can generate when approached the right way, and the sooner more developers go down this road, the better.
Episode 1 is released later today.

You know what is annoying, I found out the chapter names. Now it doesn't sound big, but I always relished seeing those white bold letters coming across the screen revealing a cool new chapter name. Still, great review...but I want to see what 1UP and gamespot give it (IGN can kiss my ass).

Eurogamer are normally pretty harsh with their reviews so this bodes well for Episode One.

NICE! Good the better the scores the better for Valve and us!

Well they certainly weren't harsh with this one. I think the only drawback they mentioned was that HL2:EP1 is only about 5h long, but quickly explained that someone thinking it's short is missing the point of this booster/expansion.

The big problem I see is the game time vs the retail box price, personally I'm a steam man for purchases but I noted with some alarm that the SiN emergence retail box was being sold at 20 pounds ($37) rather than the 10 -12 Pounds ($20+) as I'd of expected based upon the steam purchase price. I'm imagining that HL2 Episode 1 is probably going to end up with a similar box price and if that is the case then I think Johnny high street might not be so keen to buy future episodes. :|

Why wont Valve Store accept paypal! now I have to wait till retail versions. BAH BAH, tripple times BAH.

PS: have seen Sin Emer. retail for 19,95 here ont he shelves... in euros that is, so thats about 25.6 US Dollar.

It totally depends on the developer as to how good episodic content will be. Case in point Sin Vs. HL2: Ep1.
Every video I've seen so far for Sin left me underwhelmed in a big way and I don't even have the desire to warez it to see what it's like.

On the flip side after seeing the first video of HL2: Ep1 I preordered it in a flash. The forth video basically turned my happy switch to 100% and I'm actually excited about waking up tomorrow. And the reason: STORY and characters I can identify with.

Damn timezones, I'm not staying up to 4am in the morning to play it...

It does look great however and I look forward to playing it at an hour that actually exists.

Bullocks - almost every review they give is on par or above the media average. Where do you get your information from? Or are you just a compulsive Valve buttlicker?

Episode One is retailing for £17.99 here in the UK from Gameplay.com. At current exchange rates that's $33.48. On Steam it's selling for $19.95 which is £10.71. Nice.

LOL, you didnt state it as an opinion, you specifically said that Eurogamer rate games lower than other websites - you didn't state that you had observed this, or it' your opnion - you stated it as a fact.

Can we ban AnusFace please.
I don't like his name, or him. He's just a troll.

Then that means you just did the exact same thing, you stated your opinion as fact. If what you are saying is indeed a fact, I'd like to see a full write up on Eurogamer's scoring history and a few graphs and pie-charts would be great too. Becuase without a refrence or proof, it’s only an opinion. I'll give you a few hours to produce this information for me. Thanks.

"...The gunship battle in the confines of a rapidly disintegrating rooftop attic is a particularly impressive display of the Source engine's capabilities."

Awesome... :bounce:

He's not even a good troll (one with arguments), more troll-lite all the swagger but none of the substance.

Let him stay... He's making himself look like a douchebag and it's very fun to watch.

Good reveiws :D

By the way, you spelt 'thought' as 'though' in the news post on the home page.

and you spelled "reviews" as "reveiws" :)

Wait up- Ep.1 is being released universally at 6 PM GMT. That means that the Brits will get it at roughly 6, and I'll get it at 1:00? Am I retarded, or is that half an hour away? :O

Lets face it though guys, a review is a review. Thats OTHER people's opinion. Who is more right than the person that plays it eh? At the end of the day, opinion is opinion and nobody can over-rule your own.

But in 20 minutes, we shall all make our own.

oooh, we be close. Hehe.

I'm gona go make a sandwich...

EDIT: Now Thats a sandwich.... hmmmm

DoubleEDIT: Are we gona have to restart steam btw?
