MOSCOW ? Gazprom, the Russian gas monopoly, halted nearly all its natural gas exports to Europe on Tuesday, sharply escalating its pricing dispute with neighboring Ukraine. The cutoff led to immediate shortages from France to Turkey and underscored Moscow?s increasingly confrontational posture toward the West.

Across Europe, countries reported precipitous drops in gas pressure in their pipelines at the peak of the winter heating season in a bitterly cold January.

With temperatures plunging, European leaders expressed mounting concern. Some countries announced rationing for industrial customers to reserve enough heating for residential buildings.

I don't know how how bad it is in other countries, but over here we're already feeling the effects. And they couldn't of picked a worse time to pull this bullshit, we registered as little as -25 celsius today.

yup...our country stopped receiving Russian gas this morning.

and europe still isn't investing in alternative sources...hint: GEOTHERMAL!!!

We have central heating so I don't think that affects me.

I have yet to see the results, though i am already saving for blankets.

Yeah people who use gas for home heating just light it as it comes out of the pipe and warm themselves beside the open flame, they don't use it to power their central heating or anything.

a note to all the cocksucking politicians.

take a really GOOD look at this map

most Europe has viable hot water extraction spots at 5km (almost "standard" drilling depth)...which is perfect for home heating. (<100C)

oh and here's a map for you, US folk.

Yeah yeah jverne, we all know you have stock invested in drilling companies, cut the sales pitch :P

What does your boiler run off!?

It's been so cold the last week or so, the wind chill is unbearable sometimes...I'm sure the Scandinavians think it's nothing.

I heard about this story yesterday. Absolutely nuts, good luck to you guys. I live in the desert and even here we would freeze in January without heating; I can't imagine being in colder places in Euorpe. I have a lot of relatives in Poland; so far they haven't been affected yet and hopefully they won't be.

i wish...i'm too broke to invest in anything right now. :( but if i did have some money...i might invest in Blizzard, having 12million addicts is really a no brainier investment choice. either that or elf porn. :)

yeah the whole world should stard using environmental renewable sources of energy.

thankfully I heard somwhere that Obama will be investing more in renewable energy when he is endorsed as prez of the oosa.

well...geothermal is not that renewable...but there so much of it we can say it's almost unlimited for near future needs.

As someone dying of flu I would prefer not to freeze to death this winter.

Sounds like Europe is going to be a pretty cool place this winter.

Karnkraftverk ar det enda riktiga vi har atm, sa jag tycker inte de ska forsvinna innan vi har nagot att ersatta dem med (kolkraft fran ostblocket ar inget alternativ).

In other words, BOOBIES! Cold ones.

Hey guys, this isn't the swedish thread.

Start pumping more CO2 into the atmosphere to speed global warming up. In all seriousness best of luck.

we didn't have a "native language" conversation thread in a while now, haven't we? :)

Kakogo chyorta? Nash krayina ye zbyratysia layno, polityka i hospodarstvo... khrenoten :|

Golosuy ne golosuy vsyo ravno poluchish' hooy :(

Apparently the other night the temperature was supposed to reach lows of -7 in Greater Manchester. It's been pretty damn cold here over the last few days.

Before I finally returned home to recover from a severe case of flu (probably caused by a compromised immune system by exposure to the elements) me and Kase saw the River Dee in our home city frozen over. That shit is ****ed up.

It was fairly warm today. I don't know what you guys are talking about.

Florida is so nice.
