We seem to be doing it the wrong way.
A "7600t Destroyer" that's bigger than 9750t Cruisers:
An ROKN KDX-III destroyer (Front) vs 2 USN Ticonderoga class cruisers (Right next to it). Somebody is lying about the displacement of the two ships here.
Found this on the net, and thought it was pretty funny. For those that don't know, generally speaking, cruisers are supposed to be bigger than destroyers.
We seem to have a tendency to downsize our threatening phallic-shaped vessels of war, I suppose. Apparently the KDX-III's real displacement is around 10,000t ~ 11,000t.
