With insects, I believe it had a good deal to do with the atmosphere. In the show they talked about how at first, the oxygen level of Earth blew, and that the giant scorpians breathed through their skin more or less. So they were big. But once there was a shitload of oxygen, they got to be very small.

So this one time at band camp I breeded a human and a bear togeather. Looked kinda like Jesus. Then he even spoke english.. it sounded like he said "this second coming".
