Exit 17 strider boss glitch

I can't finish Episode 1, because when I open the gate for Alyx and the strider and 2 combine come in, the strider will only shoot at the wheel I turned to open the gate for Alyx. He doesn't shoot at me, or the train door thing that he's supposed to shoot (yes, I know that because I read a walkthrough, but only because I'm stuck here.) He just shoots at the stupid wheel. Can anyone help me? I want to finish the game!
 
Restart the level.
And the train door is not supposed to be open, but the container's door. The container's door is to the left of the crank.
 
I was playing through ep 1 again today with commentary on, and I had this problem too.
The strider just blasts the wheel and there's nothing I can do to get it to destroy the shipping container like it's supposed to.
What's wierd is that I've played through twice before with no problems. I assumed it was the voice over and the way I'd timed activating it, but I reloaded Exit 17 without commentary and got the same problem.
Anyone else getting this?
 
I've never face this kind of problem. Do you guys have Steam?
 
yeah I've got steam installed and functioning just fine, as far as I'm aware.
have there been any recent updates to ep 1? In "my games" ep 1 is on "updating 0%", but as far as I know, no updates have affected the strider battle anyway.
 
Strider glich fix

I was stuck with the strider just shooting at the wheel. Here's what worked for me. I took a pallet and put in in front of the wheel. This makes the strider stop shooting. Then I went infront of the strider and grabbed a drum. It took a couple tries but if you throw the drum to the right it might land in a place where you can get it on your side of the fence. I tossed the drum to the left of the last containor and it rolled to the far left corner of the fence, From there i could pick it up over the fence. Then I put the pallet flat in front of the wheel put the drum on top of the pallet in front of the wheel. This caused the strider to use the cannon and uppere the containor door.
 
I have steam, and it works fine. I haven't played with the commentary on yet. I waited for about 30 minutes and then I started messing around with the wood pallets in front of the wheel. Then the strider did his secondary "laser beam" attack, which broke the wheel. Then he shot open the container doors, and I was able to continue. Thanks for the help anyways guys, it looks like you just have to mess around with the pallets in front of the wheel.
 
Good to see you've found a way to trigger the AI to continue, although you shouldn't have to do that, it's meant to do it on its own. I'd validate your episode one files by going to your 'my games' list, right clicking Ep.1, going to properties and clicking 'validate integrity of game cache' button, and allow steam to fix any issues with that game, and that should eradicate any problems in the future.
 
This seems pretty widespread lately..perhaps an ill effect of the same patch that dumbed down the climax of the LowLife level by lessening the amount of zombies..

I just played through that section for the first time since said patch, and it felt a lot slower than the first time...without all the zombies running around the corner, it just wasnt as scary...
 
thanks for the ideas guys, I'll give it a shot. It's a bummer to have to coax the AI along it's script, though.
If it is the fault of the patch, it seems an odd effect for it to have. It certainly doesn't really make the whole involuntary update/difficulty adjustment thing any easier to swallow.
 
yeah i started playing today and i got the same glitch i even tried a save from when i first played though. I tried using the wood pallet but the strider killed me
 
I got this same glitch. I played through the chapter THREE TIMES and it happened every time.
