External Harddrive

As I've mentioned I'm very spastic about keeping files for long periods of time. With my recent purchase of a camera with a gig stick, I'm taking up more and more space each day. No big deal. However, I have an external hd, WD 120gb, and was wondering how long they last? There's no on/off switch on it, so I usually just pull the plug on it when I'm done using it. Is this safe? And most of the time, my comp says its busy and doesnt say its safe to remove it from the comp. But I dont remove the usb, i unplug the power. Is this ok?

I'm not sure, i think thats fine aslong as you (using windows xp) make sure windows isnt using it anymore and remove the devise. You should be alright.
