keep getting IE popups :\
checked for spyware, nothing major. cleaned anyway. clean for viruses.

in task manager IE is always running and uses 50mb of system memory. which takes the piss.

it may have something to do with a certian user of my PC who keeps downloading bullshit full of spyware like these 'free' game plugins and MSN extras. but ive cleaned everything out ffs

Switch to good Mozilla Firefox. u wont regret it!!

I agree SO much. I can't belive people are still using that buggy ass IE6 or the buggy ass copy of FireFox IE7.

adaware, just trying spybot now.

spybot found some stuff. should hope its normal now

Stop downloading porn. A spyware blocker helps. I have the trend micro utility pack. It kicks ass, I have never gotten spyware or a virus!

Granted I did pay $50 for a years subscription but trend micro rocks. I love them. Its awsome being able to torrent and open .exe's without having to worry. Trend micro always catches the viruses.

After you finish with Spybot S&D, do the following:

Good for Windows XP (SP2)

Press Star, control Panel, Internet Options.

In the General Tab:
(Note this will clear out your temporary internet files folder, so if you have passwords and screen names restored, you will have to enter them again, as most pages will not recognise you when you visit)

In the temporary internet Files:
Press "Delete Cookies" Press OK.
Press "Delete Files" Mark "Delete All Offline Files" Press OK.
Press "Settings" In the "Check For Newer Version of stored pages" "Never" should be marked, and also set your "Temporary Internet Files" Folder to 128MB. Press OK.

History:
Press "Clear History" Press Yes.

In The security tab:

Press "Internet" In the security level press "Default level" Press "Apply"
Press "Local Internet" In the security level press "Default level" Press "Apply"
Press "Trusted Sites" In the security level press "Default level" Press "Apply"
Press "Restricted" In the security level press "Default level" Press "Apply"

Privacy:

Set privacy back to default level press apply.
On the bottom you will see the "Pop-up blocker" option. Mark "Block Pop-ups" and press "Settings" In the "filter level" select "Medium" and press close.

Advanced tab:
Press "Restore defaults" Press "Apply" and then press OK.

Back to Control Panel.
Press Windows Firewall, make sure Firewall is turned on.
Press "Exceptions" Make sure programs that you didn't allow to have have access to internet is marked. Services like "Files and Printer Sharing and Windows Messenger" (Not MSN Messenger) should be unmarked. Unless you use them and marked on propose.
Press the "Advanced" tab, in the ICMP option press "Settings" none of those services should be marked, unmark them all unless its your choice to mark them, Your computer should not be listening at all unless you choose.
Press OK and then OK.

Reboot system.

Let me know how it goes.

Good Luck.

^ shut up, i use firefox. as i clearly stated

Try to see if you can disable IE completly, like delete a key file or something so it cant run. It might be a bad idea, or it might help tremendously.

I don't think you can simply uninstall IE or mess with registry without creating headache for yourself, You can only repair it, but that's about it.
You can't disable it either, but you can give other browsers the priority to be your default internet browser.

i don't think you want to uninstall ie unless you want to break hundreds of apps.

you can also try a program called hijack this.

thanks for ur post barney i tried it but hasnt worked. probly reduced the issue though

I've succesfully deleted 100% of IE without destroying anything else. :| n00bs.

Lol, maybe you could educate us and tell us how my dear sir.

I am doing VERY fine using IE6. If you guys feel you need the protection of FireFox, then I declare you noob to the internet. Nothing is wrong with IE and I have had ZERO problems since day one of my computer (7-12-05).

Spybot S&D was what I used before I found Opera. If you're stuck sharing your computer with an IE user, first of all, you have my deepest sympathies, and second, Spybot S&D has a free trial version if you're strapped.

I feel the need to use FF for tabbed browsing and slimnessness. Even if IE6 did have tabbed browsing (does it?) I still prefer firefox...teh slimnessness!

The new beta IE has tabs, and looks pretty slim. Though I wouldn't know, seeing as I have to run that stupid genuine Windows bs...

IE7 is full of carps, I wouldn't recommend you to DL it now, as it is in it's early stages of beta.

If you want tabs, just get yahoo toolbar, although I personnally just find that feature of it annoying (tabs suck :p)

er.. it's simple but you have to reinstall some stuff you can't actually remove it without not having to re install certain components.

It got rid of my spyware problem which was a very big pain in the ass, crazy frog popping up when I connect to a CS:S game causing me to have to exit and reboot CS:S because it screwed it up and made it run slow.
