Failed to initialize

All,
I am having a problem with hammer when I open it up I get a message saying:
"Failed to initialize texture system"
in the messages window

If I try and open a map it comes up with dialog box:
"No textures are available for use with that game. You must set them up in the textures tab of the Options dailog box before you can edit maps for this game"

So, I have tried to find the textures files associated with each game to no avail - there does not seem to be a steam "wad" file that I can load. I have uninstalled steam and reinstalled it and tried to delete the gamecfg.ini file. Neither of these has solved the problem.

Any suggestions wold be welcome

This error is given when another program interferes with Hammer's ability to load its textures. Try closing older versions of Hammer as well as any image editors and other suspect programs.

i also had the same problem before, i want into the options/tools dialouge and reconfigured the settings
