Update 1:
We can now confirm that the "Half-Life 3" trademark has been removed from the Trademarks and Design Registration Office of the European Union (OHIM) website. The entrant appears to have disappeared entirely after only being listed on the website database for little over a week, allowing us to identify that the trademark's listing was more than likely a hoax intended to generate fake buzz for a game which is unlikely to appear for several years. Returning readers may remember when we had discussed how the "Half-Life 3" listing was previously never officially checked or authenticated before its removal.

On October 2nd 2013, a brand new trademark filing appeared on the same site, this time for "Portal 3", which is listed under the trademark number of "012190286". While this new filing should almost definitely be taken with a rather large pinch of salt, we can confirm that the "Portal 3" listing appears to have been appropriately examined by OHIM, unlike the previously listed "Half-Life 3" trademark. Thanks to the recent sneak peak into Valve's Jira account, we can confirm that there is currently no "Portal 3" development team within the company, highlighting that this brand new listing is also very likely a hoax of some kind, regardless of whether or not it has been officially examined. We'll keep you posted if and when we learn more.

Original Post:
There has been some talk today on the Neogaf forums surrounding Valve's registration of the name "Half-Life 3" as a trademark in Europe on September 29th. No such similar trademark exists in the US Patents and Trademark office. While it is tempting to get excited about such a development, it is worth noting that it is fairly common place for a company to hold onto numerical trademarks and web addresses far ahead of any potential future release in order to prevent complications further down the line. The trademark has yet to be appropriately examined and approved, as shown below.

A quick search of the US Patents and Trademark office shows that Valve already own such names for potential products in the future, including Dota 3, and of course Valve have regularly updated their ownership of the www.half-life3.com domain over the last few years. Please remember that the existence of a trademark such as this has very little to do with the development of any game title, as we imagine this kind of trademark is submitted simply to protect intellectual property, regardless of whether or not a company will ever use said trademark. A recent example of this comes directly from publisher Electronic Arts, who registered domain names for the Battlefield series as far ahead as Battlefield 20!

Until such time as there is an official announcement or direct reference to the upcoming release of a new game or series, it is best to consider all such discoveries as nothing more than rumours.

BRB filing trademark for Battlefield 22.

Well, I still wonder what their 2014 game will be...I mean, they surely will have one, they cant break the "release game every year" deal they had since...Idk..2003 ?

Why did they wait to file a trademark for it in Europe until now? Didn't they file a trademark for it in the US along with Half-Life 2 in 1999 or something like that? Do European trademarks expire a lot quicker?

Yep. Since Day of Defeat in 2003 they've managed at least one game a year. It's pretty ridiculous when people claim Valve have a small output.

Just checked, and half-life4.com is taken, but oddly not by Valve.

I think it's real. There is no reason why Valve wouldn't be wanting to protect the name even if they aren't gonna be working on it for a while.

Either way it's NOT happening anytime soon...Valve has too much going on right now to spend too much time on HL3. They are making all the money they want without tapping the HL mother load...so why should they?

Because it makes no sense to employ level designers, artists, etc. to sit on their hands all day.

For all Valve is diversifying, they still have a large number of people on board who are really good at making games. Having them not make games would be crazy.

That would be pretty funny if it just, all of a sudden, appeared on the Steam store for purchase without any form of announcement or hint ahead of time.

i can't tell you how many times i've heard this same idea

Apparently, Valve has released at least a game each year since HL debut in 98, except for the year of 2002:

98 - HL
99 - TF, HL Opposing Force, HL Uplink
00 - CS, Ricochet, Deathmatch Classic
01 - HL Blue Shift, HL Decay
02 - *none*
03- DoD
04- HL2, CS Condition Zero, CS Source
05- DoD Source
06- HL2Ep1
07- HL2Ep2, TF2, Portal
08- LfD
09- LfD2
10- Alien Swarm
11- Portal 2
12- CS:GO
13- Dota 2
14- ?

Pretty sure a few of those were Gearbox, mister.

They're making a lot of money, yes, but how do you know they're making all the money they want? More money is always better. Besides, they clearly don't have too much going on right now. Valve is a very big company. They have over 100 people (at least) who work solely on game development, and we have no idea what they're doing. Clearly, they're working on multiple projects.

Honestly, I don't understand the naysayers who try to argue (without evidence) that Valve is not/should not be working on Half-Life 3. It's like they want everyone to be as unhappy as they are.

Valve didn't make GO, why do people keep saying this.

And yeah, Gearbox made the expansions, and HL Uplink to PS2. Turtle Rock made L4D1.

I think they are busy making games...just not getting ready to launch at any moment HL3. Of course they are most likely working on it.

I don't want anyone to be unhappy. It's just that each time this kind of speculation comes around it ends in the same way: Disappointment. I am sure they are working on it, but as for the release date? Who knows? 1 year, 2, 4? Maybe more? I don't have a crystal ball. I am pretty sure that all this will end up in nothing as usual, but believe me I would be very happy to be wrong and have HL3 or HL2:ep3 or whatever come out!

They published it, and worked on it too, even though not solely. Same goes for HL:OF and HL:BS

I was under the impression that Valve and Hidden Path made CSGO together. Also I think technically Turtle Rock didn't exist at the time L4D1 was released as Valve had semi-absorbed them before splitting them back out again.

You would be correct. People like to believe Valve had nothing to do with it so they can continually bitch about "All Valve does is make hats".

I came to debunk some theories.

"They are just doing it to protect the trademark"
Valve didnt just do it to protect it, when you register a trademark, you need to prove that you're not just registering it for the lols, so they will have to give a solid proof that they are producing it or they will loose it for ever.

"They still could release it in 10 years(or some sh*t)"
Valve usually registers a trademark a short time (less than 3 Years usually) before its release, if you look up "Valve Corporation" on the Trademark site, you'll see that they Registered Dota 2 in 2011 for example.

Also, the law requires you to give a proof that you're actually doing something with it but you CAN expand the time to give a proof after 2.5 years

I guess it would make sense for me if Valve skips this next year, since they have nothing officially announced. I think they would probably announce something (HL3, LfD3) next year and release it in 15'.

Then why does Valve own "Dota 3"? Are they going to release it in the next 2.5-3 years? Nope.

I honestly don't think they are going to release a game next year. They might announce something. Though I think next year's focus for Valve will be pushing the Steam Machines/OS/Controller/Platform itself into as many living rooms as possible. If they are able to release something as well as the Steam Hardware I will be surprised.

Re-releases of all Valve games for SteamOS? Comes free with purchase of a Steam Machine.

Possibly. I still think they would want to give us a game to boost SteamOSMachineController launch

That used to link to the Half-Life 3 trademark claim just a while ago. Now it's gone.

Even if you search, all you find is the original half-life trademark they've had for years.

You say that the Portal 3 trademark has been authenticated, where the HL3 one was not. How do you know, either way? You don't tell us.

Trademarks on the OHIM site have a series of tickboxes in the "Trade Mark" section which examine the entrant. Half-Life 3 never 'ticked off' all the boxes, while the Portal 3 one has. But like I explained in the post, it means nothing at all. It is as valid as the fact that we have a "Portal 3" category here on the site.

Ah, I got you. But then why mention at all that the Portal 3 trademark was "authenticated"? Checking a few more boxes doesn't mean that. It's confusing.
