I recently bought a notepad for the soul purpose of turning it into a portable homage to great PC rpgs of yesteryear. The plan is to get every worthy rpg of this era looking and playing as good as possible and any mod suggestions or additons to the series listed above would be appreciated.

So far I have a resolution mod that works ok for Planescape, and that's it.

I bought PS:T along with the BG games last year but still haven't really gotten around to playing either of them properly yet. My 4870 doesn't get on with Torment at all, and I'm no more than a few hours into Baldur's Gate 2.

For BG2 I used the widescreen mod Eejit linked too (same as the one in the Planescape guide below, it works for all the Infinity Engine games I think) along with the BG2 fixpack, tweak pack and banter pack. There's also a bunch of updates to the character and weapon/item sprites here but I honestly can't remember which ones I've installed at this point. Probably all of them. It doesn't look quite as good as Torment but still holds up pretty well at 1280x800.

For Torment I used this step-by-step guide: http://thunderpeel2001.blogspot.com/2009/01/planescape-torment-fully-modded.html

I wished there were mods that actually made ones companions semi-intelligent.

While Baldur's Gate 2 remains my favorite game of all time, I have still not been able to get beyond an hour through Planescape Torment. How is the ****ing game even possible?! You get out of the first dungeon and then are given pretty much free reign in a large city to do... what exactly? Where the **** do you go? How the **** do you even level up? I found some guys to fight once, but they absolutely mauled me.

Yeah, yeah, use a walkthrough... I have before, but it just plain bothered me since there HAS to be a way to figure out how to do all this bullshit in-game.

I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone has ever even gotten anywhere in this game, let alone enjoyed it.

Anyway, that widescreen thing is the only one I've ever used. :p

Considering that Planescape is actually far more linear than either of the BG games, it's hard to know where your problem arises. You're given an overall direction straight from the off: 'find Pharod, find my journal'. You did know how to check your in-game journal, right? You should give it another try.

So when you say you got a "notepad" for this, what exactly do you mean? What are the specs? I am thinking of doing the same thing with a netbook once they release dual core Atom processors in them....

You level up by recovering memories/dialogue/doing quests. The game is not about combat. You'll never have to go to any area to kill monsters in order to level up.

Also, not knowing where to go is really common. The objectives are often really vague, you'll rarely be directed to a specific place. The game is about exploring the city, asking questions, doing side missions, etc. You will eventually figure out where to go.

I would suggest you get a bunch of emulators and try some of the old console rpg's too

It's an HP 311c - single core Atom, 3 gig memory, Windows 7 pro. It struggles with current games, but anything of the Fallout era plays fine. I use it for network/server troubleshooting when onsite and old skool rpgs on the way home. I'm not usually a fan of netbooks - most of the ones we build for clients are cheap and tacky - but when this came in I had to own one that damn minute! It's :)

Good plan.

You talk to everyone. A majority of the experience comes from talking to people.

Planescape: Torment is unorthodox in that it doesn't hold your hand - you are supposed to work like a detective, discover your past and experience one of the greatest stories of our times. I certainly had no problem figuring out what to do.

That said, the best Fallout 2 mod out right now is the Fallout 2 Restoration Patch. It's like what Team Gizka did for KOTOR2, except released and working perfectly!

Do you know if the restoration patch works with resolution patch?

The high def/widescreen mod will probably be compatible with any other unless it tries to do the same thing.

Those widescreen mods are some of the best things to happen to gaming in ages. Priceless.

@Warb: Thanks for the specs and model. I am seriously considering the same thing now. 3 GB of RAM though? I thought the limit is 1....

It comes with one and a spare slot you can stick two in.

It comes with two: classic mash's high resolution patch and an updated high resolution dx9 renderer, as well as maps with black lines to cover areas not developed in the mapper.

There's a separate in-game menu for selecting your resolution, renderer and other miscellanea.

F2:RP is the apex of classic Fallouts. Includes the EPA, a massive military base spanning seven maps!

Damnit Tagaziel, stop making me want to reinstall Fallout 2 to experience it with the Restoration Project, I don't have the time, man!

Yes you have.

Did I mention you can get one of three new companion NPCs in the EPA, each with a detailed background, unique personality and a dialogue file longer than most vanilla NPCs?

Or that it includes the submarine I designed and wrote backstory for (which is also accessible)?

I just saw a BG2 screenshot in this thread and my mind was flooded with happy damn memories. I've played the game too many times now to play it through again, though.

I miss when Bioware made RPGs like that. RPGs that had all the great storytelling, but actually satisfying combat to go with it.
