The fan on my motherboard has started to sound weird. Its really loud and sounds different than it use too. I have tried cleaning it and it stops but the noise comes back after a while...

any ideas what the problem can be?

Fan on your mobo meaning the cpu fan? And what does it sound like, i.e. squeaking, buzzing, ect.

how are you sure that its the little cooler on ya motherboard?

I look up the model number tomorow..

i know its that one cuz i tried to stop all the fans with my finger at startup..and when i stopped that one the sound stopped..

Some fans make a little intermittant buzzing sound when they go bad. I've had some fans with sleeve bearings do this. I'm not sure if ball bearing fans sound the same. Sometimes tapping it on the top makes it stop, and the fan spins faster and easier. If that happens with yours it's going bad.

It's probably a 40mm fan. They're pretty easy to replace.

weird... how old is it? it might be starting to die on ya... though i doubt it, we can help out a lot more if we get the model number though (see what kind of cooler it it)

Yeah i have a crappy geforce2 card, its running without the cooler because it burned out... it made some noises and then died.... but dont be afraid of your motherboard getting fried just because you don't have that cooler (i wouldn't recormend not getting a new one though) it might just reduce the lifespand of the board from 10 years to say 8 years.... but those little coolers are cheap so just purchase a new one (if it infact is defect ofcourse)
