Hi i know this isn't directly related to hal-life 2 but i am trying to resolve overheating problems, which i somtimes get in hl2.

i am looking into purchesing the following fans (in total i need 4 fans)

obviously to get the best performance the back fans should be sucking air out of the computer while the front fans should be sucking air into the computer this allows the best flow. however how do i tell which fans suck air in or out?

I intend to purchese over the net but i cant seem to tell which way the case fan sucks.

take a look at the following link, does it suck air in or out? how do you tell?

If the link i gave you does not display the direction of the 'sucktion' could you post other links in which tell you the direction.

Or am i just being stupid, can one fan such in any direcion?

My experience has been that the fans blow air past the support frame that hold the fan motor in place. The most open part of the fan is considered the front, or the intake side.

Also I would look at the rate of air they move. You can do some research and compare the DB (noise) level and the CFM levels to see what may fit your needs better.

Good luck.

so are you saying that there is only one type of fan? wtf? i understand about noise. i am just confuzed about which fans blow in which directions at the moment all i can imagin is all fans blowing air into the computer. i want some fans blowing out.

i assume that you can swap the wires over to rotate the fan, but i just wondered if there were just normal retail versions of this

All fans suck and blow. Just flip the fan around to change it.

How I find out is, I place the fan in the palm of my hand, spin the blade with my finger, and see if it blows air on my hand. If it does, then that's the blowing side and the other is the sucking side. If it doesn't, then that's the sucking side and the other is the blowing side.

also, the side that has the blades cupped is the blowing side. The side with the blades curved inward.

All fans are made to spin one direction and blow air in one direction.
It's up to you to mount the fan so it blows air in or out of the case.

Most fans have arrows that indicate which direction the fan spins and the direction of the airflow. Notice in that picture, there are arrows on the side of the fan right in the center.

This is a very good rule of thumb. I don't think I've seen it the reverse.
