The Fat Boys took Far Cry down from a great game to a good game.

tbh, i wasnt going to get the game. but now i am. why? because i played sulkdodds' copy, and i played untill just after the carrier. but during that part i was astounded at how ignorant i had been of thinking the game was average. everything shines, the enemies realistically react to you and the game plays and feels AMAZING. it is truly an astounding game and im ordering it from amazon.co.uk today.
i can finally understand what sulk was on about now!

Oh good.
But even I've got to admit it had some pieces of bad design in it. I didn't like the fatboys much and it annoyed me when you get stuck in a corridor with one of them. The bit you mention is an example of the occasionally careless level design but hey, you get that in every game (okay so thats not the point).
As for the Dam level...well, I thought it was great. I killed the first Trigen with nine bullets and then I was sneaking/running-like-crazy-once-they-spot-me through the jungle with one bullet in my M4...and then I swam along the river bed to the crashed Blackhawk and after that you have decent guns.
One thing that annoyed me: You can't shoot out of water. It doesn't sound like much but in a game with so of the stuff it gets ridiculous. Why can't I rise from the waters like some horrible swamp monster, unleash a burst into some mercs and submerge again? Or shoot at the patrol boat that's right on top of me? Or, for that matter, hunt fish with an M4?
What i'm excited about is the fact that Far Cry has done pretty much everything HL2 was supposed to do. Now, I know for a fact that HL2 will be better than Far Cry. Cue perverse logic: this means HL2 will be absolutely bloody brilliant.
Finally: You can blow up buildings for fun. That's got to be worth something.
