Hey,

Im getting a Rad 9800 pro 256mb and a top quality mobo, im just curious...wtf are fastwrites? I read about some1 questioning something about Fast Writes but it doznt explain what they indeed are.

Also,
AA= Smooths jagged edges
Af= does what?

Lastly,
Hardware Accel- ?

Im only 15 and i really aint advanced in all this stuff, any help would be gr8.

:cheers:

dunno, i know they are both worth turnign on if you play at a res like 1024x768, or around? why are you getting a 256 9800 pro? you will only need it if you want to play at like 1600x1200...and thats outragous. i tried that for halflife, and its cool because of small dod crosshair, but the text is almost unreadable, now i cant even tell if someone is accusing me of hacking like the normally do.

but if you do plan on playing game that high than the 256 is good. other wise save your money. all i know about AF is thats its godd? and is worth turning on sometimes.

What is anisotropic filtering?

"Think of the text in the titles at the beginning of the Star Wars movies that is presented in large letters and then scrolls back into the distance. As it scrolls off, it becomes fuzzy and hard to read. In a 3D image, you may want a comparable effect to retain the sharpness of an object as it recedes; anisotropic filtering does this."

Fast Writes are an aspect of the AGP standard that was never fully implemented by video card developers and motherboard developers. More likely to hurt than help.

As for getting a 256mb video card right now...the advantage is that down the line you will have enough memory for the super high res models/filters that will probably be released for Half Life 2 a few months down the line, and you'll be able to play at 1600x1200 with 4x AA and 16x AF at playable framerates.

thanks Zyph,

But what does Hardware Acceleration do?

Uh, hardware acceleration means that the video card does the hard work instead of your CPU.

AF...the easiest way possible to see ..

Turn it off, go into say hl, look at the ground in front of you, it will be all blurry without AF on, now turn AF onto 2x, now look at the ground in front of you, you will see its much more clearer but it starts to get blurry as you look further down, the higher you turn it, the farther you can look and not see blurry textures.

Drivers for ATI and Nvidia are written such that AF doesn't hurt framerates much either. Some prefer ATI's method though.
